Real - time crowd status
of Mumbai locals using
an IR sensor
Mumbai Local Trains
• Mumbai locals are the lifeline of the people in
the city of Mumbai
• These trains connect different parts of the city,
making it easier for people to travel to work,
school, or anywhere else they need to go.
• Millions of people from different age group
travel through Mumbai locals such as students
going to school/college, office workers heading
to their jobs, and families going shopping, etc.
Overcrowding in Mumbai Locals
• High population in Mumbai puts immense pressure on
the city's infrastructure, including its public
transportation system.
• During rush hour, the trains get extremely crowded, and
it's hard to find space to stand.
• Wherever you can get a foothold, or even a toehold, you
will find someone hanging on.
• Specific trains are extremely overcrowded while others
are comparatively less crowded or even spacious at
times.
• Sometimes, people have to wait for several trains before
they can finally get on one.

From the survey we can conclude that, 85% train travellers would like to receive real – time crowd status update.
Implementation
• Different technologies can be used to keep a track of real – time crowd status such as
sensors, data analytics, mobile applications, etc.
• Sensors such a IR sensors can be deployed near the door or near seating areas of
the train such that it covers entire compartment.
• Since IR sensors are sensitive to heat emitted by objects they will sense the heat
signatures emitted by people travelling through the train in real-time.
• Algorithms can be developed to detect these signals and update the data received
on the database.
• This data will then be analyzed to identify the duration and amount of infrared
signals being emitted in the train and produce frequency charts depending on the IR
signals sensed which will be referred to predict real – time crowd status.
• Once crowd estimations are made, this data will then be updated on the mobile
application
