Drug Abuse
It is defined as “Inappropriate, excessive, self
administration of drug for non-medical purposes.”
OR
It is persistent excessive drug use unrelated to
medical practice.

Drug Misuse
Drug misuse is a term commonly used for prescription
medications with clinical efficacy but their
inappropriate prescribing behavior will lead to
adverse effects.
Such as sedative (CNS Depressants), CNS stimulant,
anxiolytic, narcotic analgesic,

Difference between Drug Use, Misuse &
Abuse.
‘Use' refers to proper use of any drug in medical
practice.
‘Abuse' refers to self-administration of these drugs in
large doses without prescription for non-medical
purpose.
‘Misuse' applies to the physician's role in initiating a
potentially dangerous course of therapy.

CNS DEPRESSANTS
Drugs that depress the overall
functioning of the Central Nervous
System (CNS) to induce sedation,
muscle relaxation, and

Drug dependence/Addiction:

“It is psychic/physical state in which the user has a
compelling desire to continue taking the drug
either to experience its effects or to avoid the
discomfort of its absence”.

Substance abuse:
This term is sometimes used in place of drug abuse,
because “Substance” is a non-medicinal chemical
such as Solvents, Alcohols & Nicotine/Tobacco, Glue,
Petroleum products, Rubber, Plastic etc

Signs of Drug Abuse
Stealing small items from school or home
A sharp drop of school attendance/discipline/
grades.
A drop of home works turned in
Out breaks of temper
Poor physical attendance
Secretiveness in what he's doing and possessions

needle marks.
Association with known drug users
Rejection of old friends and taking up with new
strange friends
Borrowing money from fellow students to buy
drugs

and storerooms
Sleepiness, wandering mind, lack of coordination
Craving for sweets and increased appetite.
