Stresses in Rigid Pavement

The document covers the analysis of stresses in rigid pavement, focusing on Westergaard's analysis and important terms such as modulus of subgrade reaction and critical positions of loading. It includes numerical examples and solutions related to wheel load stresses and temperature stresses, detailing how temperature variations affect pavement behavior. Additionally, it discusses warping and frictional stresses that occur due to temperature changes.

subgrade at specified deformation or pressure
level using specified plate size.
• K=(p/Δ) kg/cm3

– K= modulus of subgrade reaction

– p=pressure intensity kg/cm2
– Δ=deflection in cm, 0.125cm

Temperature Stresses
• Variation in temperature takes place with
change in time, weather and season
• When CC pavement is exposed to higher
temperature, top surface gets heated up and
bottom surface has little or no effect
• During night, temperature drops fast on top
surface than bottom surfaces
• This temperature differential tends warping of
slab

Frictional Stresses
• During summer-
– As the temperature increases, the slab tends to
expands towards expansion joint.
– Due to the frictional resistance at the interface
between the subgrade and the slab, compressive
stress is developed at the bottom of the slab
• During winter-
– Slab contracts causing tensile stresses at the
bottom due to the frictional resistance again
opposing the movement of the slab
