appreciated primarily for their beauty
or emotional power.
WHAT IS CONTEMPORARY ART?
CONTEMPORARY
- belonging to or occurring in the present:
- living or occurring at the same time:
CONTEMPORARY ART
- it is the art of today, produced in the second half
of the 20th century or in the 21st century.
Contemporary artists work in a globally
influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically
advancing world.
3 KEY ELEMENTS IN THE WORK OF
ART
FORM - THE FIRST KEY ELEMENT THAT THE
SPECTATOR SHOULD CONSIDER.
KNOWN AS THE SURFACE FEATURE OF AN ARTWORK.
“WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET”
A. VISUAL ARTS
1. TWO-DIMENSIONAL - DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS
2. THREE-DIMENSIONAL - SCULPTURE, ARCHITECTURE
3 KEY ELEMENTS IN THE WORK OF ART
B. MUSIC - STRUCTURE OF A MUSICAL
COMPOSITION SUCH AS SERENADE, OPERA,
RHAPSODY AND OTHERS
- ALSO CALLED AS MUSICAL GENRES
C. LITERATURE - PROSE, DRAMA , POETRY
D. THEATER - TRAGEDY, COMEDY, DRAMA AND
MELODRAMA
3 KEY ELEMENTS IN THE WORK OF ART
CONTENT - IT IS WHAT THE ARTWORK IS
ABOUT. IT CONTAINS THE SUBJECT MATTER THAT
CARRIES THE MESSAGE OF THE WORK.
SIMPLY CALLED THE “SUBSTANCE” OF THE WORK.
CONTEXT - VARIED SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE
WORKS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED OR INTERPRETED.
PRIMARY - PERSONAL SENTIMENTS
SECONDARY - THE PLACE, PERIOD,
ENVIRONMENT AND GEOGRAPHY, RELIGIOUS
CONVICTION
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT ART FORMS?
• DRAWING • COMPUTER ART/WEB DESIGN
• ARCHITECTURE
• PAINTING
• LITERATURE
• PRINT-MAKING
• PHOTOGRAPHY • PERFORMING ARTS
• FILM-MAKING/ A. MUSIC
CINEMA B. DANCE
C. DRAMA AND THEATRE
• SCULPTURE
ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES OF ART
• Elements of art are stylistic features that
are included within an art piece to help the
artist communicate.
• Principles of art/design is the overall
structure of an art form. It is a plan for
order. The means by which artists indicate
and demonstrate the ideas and feelings
they wish to convey. (ORGANIZATION OF
ELEMENTS)
LET'S HAVE IT ONE AT A TIME...

SPACE Example:
It is defined as a void or emptiness
which can be positive or negative.
POSITIVE SPACE - enclosed
NEGATIVE SPACE - opposite
Moreover, in other art forms....

SPACE Example:
can be referred to as an
interval or pause in literature,
it the pause in between
words.
In music, it is the interval
between notes.
Second element...
LINE Example:
is the extension of a point, a
short or long mark drawn or
carved on a surface. It is an
implied path suggesting:
a. direction - vertical ,
horizontal, diagonal
b. character - jagged, curved,
series of dots or broken lines
3RD & 4TH element...
SHAPE & FORM Example:
When the ends of a line meet,
they form a SHAPE. It can
either be a separate figure
from its surrounding or
background and can be
geometric (angular) or organic
(curvy). FORM is slightly
similar to shape. But, it is
3Dimensional.
FIFTH element...
COLOR/COLOUR Example:
It is the most striking art
element that catches the eyes.
A sensation created by visible
wavelengths of light caught in
a prism. A mixture of organic
and sythetic substances
“pigments” such as dye and
paint.
“Colors do have meanings”
Sixth element...
VALUE Example:
It is the degree of lightness
and darkness of a color.
In music it is called PITCH -
highness or lowness of a tone.
VALUE suggests an
atmosphere or mood.
Seventh/last element...
TEXTURE Example:
It is the surface of an artwork.
It can either be actual or
tactile.

actual - can be felt by touch

tactile - simulated or illusory
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN/ART
IT IS CALLED THE ORGANIZATION OF
THE ELEMENTS.
THEY ARE TOOLS FOR ORGANIZING THE
ELEMENTS OF ART TO PRODUCE A
UNIFIED AND HARMONIOUS DESIGN,
COMPOSITION, OR PERFORMANCE.
HARMONY
THIS REFERS TO THE WHOLENESS OF
THE DESIGN, THE PLEASING
ARRANGEMENT OF PARTS, AND THE
AGREEMENT BETWEEN PARTS OF A
COMPSITION; RESULTING IN A UNITED
WHOLE. CAN BE APPLIED TO MUSIC,
WRITING, “UNITY IN DIVERSITY” (UN)
VARIETY
PERTAINS TO THE ASSORTMENT OR
DIVERSITY OF A WORK OF ART.
VARIATIONS ARE PRODUCED TO
PREVENT MONOTONY AND
UNIFORMITY IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
RHYTHM
SLIGHTLY CONTRARY TO THE
VARIETY. IT IS THE REGULAR,
REPEATED PATTERN IN THE
ELEMENTS OF ART.
RHYTHM OR BEAT IS NATURAL IN
THE UNIVERSE.
PROPORTION
ELEMENTS IN A WORK OF ART
SHOULD HAVE A RELATIONSHIP
WITH ONE ANOTHER. A WELL-
PROPORTIONED SHAPE IS PLEASING
TO THE EYE.
“IN THEATRICAL OR STAGE PLAY, THE BACKDROP
AND THE PROPS MUST BE APPROPRIATE TO THE
PERFORMERS WITHOUT OUTSHINING THEM.”
BALANCE
PERTAINS TO THE EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF
WEIGHT. A PRINCIPLE THAT DEALS WITH
EQUALITY.
FORMAL BALANCE - SYMMETRICAL OR TWO
SIDES ARE IDENTICAL TO EACH OTHER
INFORMAL BALANCE - ASYMMETRICAL
BALANCE; TWO SIDES ARE NOT IDENTICAL YET
EQUAL IN VISUAL WEIGHT
MOVEMENT
A FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE IN CHOREOGRAPHY
AND THEATER ARTS. A WAY TO CONVEY
FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS.
DANCERS - BODY MOVEMENTS
ACTORS - LINES, GESTURES AND BODY
LANGUAGE, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS,
NATURE - MOVEMENT OF TIME, TIDE, PLANETS
AROUND THE SUN, MOON AND SO ON.
EMPHASIS & SUBORDINATION
EMPHASIS - GIVES IMPORTANCE TO A UNIT OR
AREA
SUBORDINATION - GIVES LESS IMPORTANCE TO
A UNIT OR SUBORDINATION

EX: CLASSROOM, PERFORMING ARTS, VISUAL

DESIGN
ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES
THESE ARE ONLY GUIDELINES AND THE ARTISTS
ARE NOT BOUND TO FOLLOW THEM.

IN THE END, HOWEVER, THE ELEMENTS AND

PRINCIPLES WILL APPEAR NATURALLY IN THEIR
WORKS.
DIFFERENT FORMS OF ART

Can you identify the different

art forms which are found in
the country/our region?
WHAT ART FORM IS THIS?
WHAT ART FORM IS THIS?
THE IMAGES SPEAK OF?
THE IMAGES SAY ABOUT?
