3rd Lect-Y-7

The document outlines the objectives for Year 7 students to measure the volume and temperature of liquids, explaining the use of measuring cylinders and thermometers. It emphasizes the importance of reading measurements accurately by aligning the eye level with the meniscus and the liquid in the thermometer. Additionally, it provides examples of volume and temperature readings for practice.

2 Materials and their Structure

2.2 Changes of State

Prepared by : Tr. Zaw

Year : 7
Date : 23.6.2023
Objectives

Students will able to:

1. Measure the volume and the temperature of a liquid

2. Explain what happens when matter changes state

Getting Started
Measuring volume:
• To measure the volume of a liquid,
we use a measuring cylinder.
• The liquid forms a curve at the top.
This is called the meniscus.
• Measure the volume from the
bottom of the meniscus.
• Make sure that our eye is level with
the meniscus.
Measuring temperature:
• To measure the temperature you use a
thermometer.
• Read the temperature from the scale
• Make sure that our eye is level with the
top of the liquid in the thermometer
1 Look at the diagram. What is the volume of water in
each measuring cylinder?

28cm3 54 cm3 82 cm3

2 What are the temperatures shown on the thermometers?

A 24°C B 15°C C 29°C
