MOBILE PHONE USAGE OF SENIOR

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HIGH

SCHOOL AND THEIR ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCES
INTRODUCTION

• Mobile phone is a device that can basically

make and receive calls over a radio link while
moving around in a wide geographic area.
However, the modern phones support very wide
variety of other services apart from making and
receiving calls. These includes; text messaging,
MMS, e-mail, internet access, short range
wireless communication, business applications,
• Mobile phone is one of the most rapidly growing
new technologies in the world. This increase of
mobile phone users includes a sharp increase in
the number of cell phones used by the younger
generations. This area of interest was chosen
because of the unregulated usage and over
dependent attitude on these devices especially
among these Senior High School students. It has
observed that the youth have consistently
displayed higher level of attachment to their
mobile phones which could serve as distractions
to them because of the time channeled to the
• High School is one of the top schools in a City,
where most students, especially the Senior High
School students have their designated mobile
phones, and in which they actively use them in
their respective classes. It is therefore, expected
that they use their mobile phones mere just for
communication. However, this isn’t the case.
Most of the time, the students use their mobile
phones not just for communication, but they use
it as well for them to expand their knowledge
about a particular subject by searching anything
• phoneswith just one-click—for the
reason as well that some teachers find it
hard to explain a certain topic, which in
turn makes it incomprehensible for
students. However, some students also

them to work poorly in their studies as
• According to Worth of Read (2016), mobile phones can provide
students a sense of safety, support, and control over their lives. To
be able to contact parents, friends, or other family members at any
time gives peace of mind for both child and their family. Mobile
phones allow parents and children to manage instances of missed
school buses, forgotten sports bags etc. with ease. Running late for
a school pick up doesn't have to require a call to the school offi ce as
if it once did. In case of emergency, having a mobile phone can be
contacted quickly. However, The Phone Town (2010) also stated that
students are just addicted to mobile phones. They can be seen
playing games, chatting, and talking to their friends on their mobile
phones most of the times. This is the reason why they don’t get
time for studies. In fact, students are more interested in wasting
their time on mobile phones, rather than spending it on studying.
• Earlier studies show that using of mobile phones in
classroom could greatly affect the studies of the
students as they could easily be distracted or lose
concentration due to lack of sleep—for the reason of
being addicted in using mobile phone too much.
Student these days are more preoccupied on
wasting so much time in using mobile phone than
studying. A study shows as well that those students
who were not using their mobile phones recall more
detailed information from the lectures they have and
scored full-letter grades than those students who
use mobile phones in their classes .
• All
these ideas point to the impact of
mobile phone. For this reason, it is
viewed that in using mobile phone,
students can benefit to this gadget
as they could easily get information
with just one-click, however they
may not do well in their academic
performances as this is also one of
• With the abovementioned scenario and
situations, it is the main objective of the

positive and negative impacts of mobile phones
to Senior High School students in their academic
