Flat Route
 The receiver runs up the field at

Slant Route
After a set number of steps or yards the
receiver will quickly stop and turn around,
looking for a pass.

Curl Route
A drag route (also known as an
in route route) the receiver runs a few yards
downfield, then turns 90° towards the center of the
field and runs parallel to the line of scrimmage.

Deep Dig Route


The receiver runs 10–20 yards from
the line of scrimmage straight
down the field, then cuts toward
the middle of the field (towards the
facing goalposts, hence the name)
at a 45-degree angle.

Post Route
 The receiver runs up the field and
then turns at approximately a 45-
degree angle, heading away from
the quarterback towards the
sideline.

Corner/flag route
 Also called a streak route the
receiver runs straight up field
towards the end zone. The goal of
the pattern is to out run any
defensive backs and get behind
them.
Fly / go route
 Strong Side Inside linebacker –
What is he called.

Mike linebacker
 Weak side inside linebacker –
What is he called?

Will linebacker
 Strong side outside linebacker,
lines up to the strong side of the
offense usually across from the
Tight End.

Sam linebacker
 A higher than usual number of
defensive players will rush the
opposing quarterback, in an
attempt either to tackle him or
force him to hurry his pass
attempt.

Blitz
 The area between where the two
offensive tackles line up prior to
the snap, Between the offensive
tackles.

Tackle box
 He, the Quarterback, receives the
ball directly from the center (not
in shotgun).

Under Center

The area of an American football
field behind the line of scrimmage

Backfield
 No running backs are behind the
line of Scrimmage but not in the
back field. Sometimes called five
wide.

Empty back field


 Only one running back in the back
field behind the LOS.

Single back
 Formation when the quarterback is
lined up behind the center 4 or 5
yards deep and receives the snap
in the air.

Shot gun
 An imaginary transverse line
(across the width of the field)
beyond which a team cannot cross
until the next play has begun.

Line of scrimmage (LOS)


 An action of a team gathering
together, usually in a tight circle.

The huddle

An action taken by the offense
that means to advance the ball by
running with it.

Rushing
 Throwing the football past the Line
of Scrimmage.
