SIGNED NUMBERS

AND DECIMALS
Adding Signed Numbers
 In adding two numbers with the same sign
, add their absolute values and copy the
common sign.
Ex.:
10 + 8 = 18 -10 + -8 = -18

 In adding two numbers with different

signs, subtract the smaller number from
the bigger number then copy the sign of
the bigger number.
Ex.:
10 + -8 = 2 -10 + 8 = -2
Add the following:
1) -8 + -5 =
2) 9 + -4 + 3=
3) -8 + 2 + -12=
4) -5+ -8 +5 =
5) -2 + -3 + 4 =
6) 4 + -15 + -4 =
7) -7 + -4 + -3=
Subtracting Signed Numbers
 In Subtracting one number from another,
change the sign of the subtrahend then
proceed as in addition.
Ex.:
12 – +6 = 12 + -6 = 6

-12 – -6 = -12 + +6 = -6

12 - -6 = 12 + +6 = 18

-12 - +6 = -12 + -6 = -18

Find the difference
1) 5 – 12 = -7
2) -1 - -5 = 4
3) -8 – 9 = -17
4) 3–2–1= 0
5) 9 - -2 – 8 = 3
6) -6 - -4 = -2
7) -4 – 5 – 6 = -15
8) 0 – 5 = -5
Multiplying Signed
Numbers
 When multiplying two numbers with the same
(like) signs, the product is positive (+).
Ex.:
9 x 4 = 36 -9 x -4 = 36

 When multiplying two numbers with different

(unlike) signs, the product is negative (-).
Ex.:
- 8 x 6 = -48 4 x -3 = -12
A. Find the product.

1) (-9) (-6) =
2) (+6) (+8) =
3) (-12) (+7) =
4) (+4) (+13) =
5) (+6) (+7) =

B. Write the equation and solve.

6) What is the product of (-8) and (-9)?

7) What is the result when (+10) is multiplied to (+9)?
8) What is (-15) times (-4)?
9) What is the product when (+3) is multiplied to the
product of (-5) and (-7)?
10) Multiply the product of (+5) and (+6) to the product
of (-3) and (-2).
Dividing Signed Numbers
 When dividing two numbers with the same
(like) signs, the quotient is positive (+).
Ex.:
36 ÷ 4 = 9 -36 ÷ -4 = 9

 When dividing two numbers with different

(unlike) signs, the quotient is negative (-).
Ex.:
- 48 ÷ 6 = -8 12 ÷ -3 = -4
A. Find the quotient.
1) (+30) ÷ (+6) =
2) (-54) ÷ (+9) =
3) (-72) ÷ (-12) =
4) (+60) ÷ (-5) =
5) (+36) ÷ (-4) =

B. Write the equation and solve.

6) Divide -144 by -12.
7) Find the quotient when 350 is divided by -7
8) Divide the product of 6 and -8 by 12.
9) Subtract the quotient of -121 by 11 from -11.
10) Divide 500 by the quotient of 75 and -3.
Decimals
Write the following as decimal numbers.

1. Seven thousand sixteen and two hundredths

2. Three hundred forty-two and sixteen ten-thousandths
3. Five hundredths
4. Eight hundred and thirty-five thousandths
5. Three thousand five hundred sixty ten-thousandths
6. Thirty-six and two hundred fifty-three thousandths
7. Forty-nine hundredths
8. Six and four hundredths
9. Thirty-four thousand and thirty-four millionths
10. Five thousand two and fifty two hundred-thousandths
Rounding Off Decimal Numbers
To round off a decimal number:
1. Find the digit in the value to which the number
is to be rounded off.
2. Look at the digit to its right.
3. Add 1 to this digit if the next digit is equal to or
greater than 5.
4. Drop the next digit and all other digits if it is less
than 5.
Ex.:
1. Round off 5.785 to the nearest tenths.
5.785 --- 5.8
2. Round off 27.943 to the nearest hundredths.
27.953 --- 27.95
Round off each decimal to the nearest tenths
and hundredths.
1. 9.86 6. 513.905
2. 73.753 7. 96.645
3. 61.3112 8. 48.573
4. 9.675 9. 15.575
5. 0.765 10. 96. 645
Round off the ff. to the indicated place value.
1. 578.3 (whole number)
2. 31.953 (hundredths)
3. 60.743 (tenths)
4. 48.67543 (ten thousandths)
5. 234.97645 (thousandths)
Adding and Subtracting Decimals
 Adding and subtracting decimals are similar
to adding and subtracting whole numbers, as
long as we first align the decimal points in the
same column. We then add from right to left.
Ex.:
4.13 + 5.24 231.47 –
152.12

4.13 231.47
+ 5.24 - 152.12
9.37 79.35
Multiplying Decimals
 Multiply the two decimals as if they were
whole numbers.
 The number of decimal digits in the product is
the sum of the number of decimal digits in
the factors.
Ex.: 5.102 x 21.03
5.102 3 decimals
x 21.03 2 decimals
15306
51020
10204
107.29506 3 + 2 = 5 decimal digits
 Multiply:
Dividing Decimals
To divide decimals:
1. Write the problem in the usual long division form.
2. Move the decimal point in the divisor until a whole
number is obtained.
3. Move the decimal point in the dividend the same
number of places as in step 2. Attach zeroes if
necessary.
4. Place the decimal point in the answer directly
above the new decimal point in the dividend.
5. Divide exactly as you would divide whole
numbers.
 Divide the following:
