Banking a Fire in The Boiler
Objectives
1. To save fuel on start up.
2. To save time on start up.
3. To prevent thermal stress during start up.

Procedure
• Shorten the fire bed:-Reduce the fire bed
thickness down to 60mm.
-Reduce stoker speed.
2. Stop the supply of combustion air:
-Stop the fans.
-Reduce the dampers to minimum.

3. Create the bank:
-Run in a bed of 120mm.
-Rake back the burning coals.
-Run in the banked fire into the boiler to
450mm from the guillotine door.
4. Preserve the bank:
-Lower the grate door to grate level.
-Seal the gap.
-Clean all the ashes.

5. Raise boiler water level to 100mm from
the top of the gauge glass.
6. Switch of the control panel.

Starting a Boiler From the Banked
Position
Procedure
1. Check that the water level in the boiler is
correct.
2. Switch on the control panel.
3. Revive the fire: Start the fans.
4. Position the fire bed to the correct start
up position: Rake the fires back to the
guillotine door.

5. Build up the fire.
6. Carry out blowdowns of the mobreys and
Gauge Glasses.
7. Build up boiler pressure.
8. Supply factory with steam:-Start opening
the main steam stop valve at 50Kpa
below operating pressure.
