Excel if and Ifs

The document provides an overview of the Excel IF function, detailing its syntax and usage, including the logical test, value_if_true, and value_if_false arguments. It also introduces the SUMIF function, explaining its syntax and providing an example of how to sum values based on a specified criterion. Overall, it serves as a guide for using these functions effectively in Excel.

General Flow Chart Structure of
Excel IF Function
1 2
•Logical test: It is the first and the mandatory
argument. It helps us specify the condition to be
tested or evaluated as either TRUE or FALSE. The
specified condition can be a value or a logical
expression.
•Value_if_true: It is an optional argument accepted
by the IF function. It helps us specify the value that
we need to return as output when the given
condition (logical test) is 'TRUE'.
•Value_if_false: It is another optional argument

Excel IF Function

MS Excel, or Microsoft Excel, is a powerful spreadsheet program that enables users to record
large amounts of data in cells within multiple worksheets. Additionally, it allows users to
perform various mathematical calculations and analytical operations on recorded data using
a wide range of existing functions and formulas. The IF function is one such built-in widely
used, most popular Excel function.

3. Syntax of IF Function

=IF(logical test, value_if_true, value_if_false)

The general format of the Excel IF function is defined as
below:

=IF(A1>B2, "TRUE", "FALSE")

• We separated the different

arguments (or parts) in the IF
formula by a Comma (,). However,
we can also use the Semicolon (;)
How to use IF Function in excel
examples to illustrate the use of the IF function:
Sum if Function
• Syntax
• The syntax for the Sum if function is as follows,
• =SUMIF (range, criteria, [sum range])
Example of sum if
• Example 1: How to sum the cells whose value are
greater than 50?
• To sum the cells value greater than 50, the steps to be
followed are,
• Step 1: Enter the data in the worksheet namely A1:A5
• Step 2: Here to sum the values which are greater than 50,
apply the logical operator greater than (>). Select a new
cell namely B1 and enter the formula as =SUMIF
(A1:A5,">50"). A1:A5 is called range and ">50" is called
criteria.
SUMIF(A1:A5,”>5
