Objectives:
1. Solve equations involving radical expressions.
2. Determine the extraneous solution of radical
equations
3. Solve equations involving radical expressions
equation with one unknown in one or more of
the radicals
4. Solves problems involving radicals.
Radical equation
is an equation with one unknown in
one
or more of the radicals.
Examples of radical equations
are:
To solve a Radical Equation:
1. Arrange the terms of the equation so that one term
with
radicals is by itself on one side of the equation.
2. Square both sides of the radical equation.
3. Combine like terms.
4. If a radical still remains, repeat step 1 to 3.
5. Solve for the variable.
6. Check apparent solutions in the original equation.
Example 1: Solve and check
Solution:
→ square each side
→ write radical in exponential form
→ apply the law of exponent
→ simplify
→ apply addition property of equality
→ solution of the equation
Checking:
→ substitute the value of x = 12
→ simplify
→ the equation is balance
Example 2: Solve and check
Solution:
→ square each side
→ write radical in exponential form
→ apply the law of exponent
→ simplify
→ apply multiplicative inverse property
→ perform the indicated operation
→ solution of the equation
Checking:
→ substitute the value of x = 1
→ simplify
→ simplify
→ the equation is balance
Example 3: Solve and check
Solution:
→ square each side
→ write radical in exponential form
→ apply the law of exponent
→ apply distributive property
→ apply addition property of equality
→ simplify
→ apply multiplicative inverse
property
→ perform the
indicated operation
→ solution
of the equation
Checking: substitute the value of x = -4
Example 4: Solve and check
Solution:
→ square both sides
→ write radical to exponential form and apply square of a
binomial
→ apply the law of exponent
→ simplify
→ combine like terms
→ multiplicative inverse
→ division property of equality
→ square both sides
→ write radical to exponential form
→ apply law of exponent
→ simplify
Checking: Substitute the value of x = 16
Practice Test
Direction: Solve the given equations.
Answer
Key
Extraneous solution
a solution that does not satisfy the given equation.
IMPORTANT:
If the squares of two numbers are equal, the numbers
may or may not be equal. Such as, (-3)2 = 32, but -3 3.
It is therefore important to check any possible solutions
for radical equations. Because in squaring both sides of a
radical equation, it is possible to get extraneous
solutions.
Example 1: Solve and check
Solution:
Check:
Additive inverse of 6 to isolate radical
square both sides
write radical in exponential form
apply the law of exponent
simplify
x = 0 is an extraneous solution
Example 2: Solve and check
Solution:
Check:
transpose 6 to isolate radical
square both sides
write radical in exponential form
apply the law of exponent
simplify
x = 4 is an extraneous solution

Problem Solving Involving Radicals
Problem 1. The square root of the sum of two consecutive odd
integers
is equal to 12. Find the smaller odd integer.
Solution:
1. Understand the problem
Let x = be the smaller odd integer
x+2 = be the larger odd number Checking:
2. Write the equation
3. Solve
→ combine like terms
→ square both sides
→ the smaller odd integer
→ the larger odd integer
The answer is 71 since it is the smaller odd integer.
Problem 2: The side of a square is cm. Find the length of the diagonal.
Solution:
1. Understand the problem Checking:
Let x = be the diagonal of a square
= the side (s) of a square
2. Write the equation
Hint: Use Pythagorean Theorem
3. Solve:
→ substitute the length of the side of the square
→ simplify
→ extract the square root both side of the equation
cm → the length of the diagonal of the square
