Translation of Algebraic Expression

The document outlines the learning objectives for translating algebraic expressions, including distinguishing between variables and constants, writing expressions in algebraic form, and translating verbal phrases into algebraic expressions. It explains the components of algebraic expressions, such as terms, coefficients, and exponents, and provides examples of how to translate these expressions into mathematical phrases for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Key terms for each operation are listed along with examples to illustrate the translation process.

Translation of algebraic

expression
The learners will be able to:

1.Distinguish a variable from a constant in an

algebraic expression.
2. Write expression in algebraic form.
3.Translate verbal phrases into algebraic
expression.
An Algebraic expression is an expression that
contains numbers and variables. In 3x + 2, there are
two terms, wherein the first term consists of a
numerical coefficient and a letter. This letter is called
variable. A Variable is a symbol used for a number
not yet known. A value of a variable can change
depending on the algebraic expression or the
equation. The second term 2 is the constant. A
constant is a number or symbol that has fixed value.
The value of the constant always remains the same.
In the algebraic expression x + 2x-3, n
represents an exponent. This is always a
positive integer that tells the number of
times the base in the exponential term is
multiplied. If n = 2 in x² + 2x – 3, this
means that x² is equal to (x)(x).
An algebraic expression can be translated to a
mathematical phrase. A mathematical phrase is a set
of words that describe an algebraic expression.

Example:

3x +2 = Two more that thrice a number

3x +2 = Thrice a number x increased by 2

Involving addition.

Some of the key terms in translating algebraic expressions

involving addition are: plus, increase by, added to, total,
sum and more than.

Examples:
4 + x = A number x more than four
X + 1 = A number x increased by one
3x + 8 = Eight more than thrice a number x
Involving subtraction.

Some of the key terms in translating algebraic

expressions involving subtraction are: difference,
decreased by, diminished by, less than subtract,
lowered by and minus.

Examples:
3 – x = A number x less than three
X – 1 = A number x minus one
2x – 5 = Five less than twice x
Involving multiplication.

Some of the key terms on translating algebraic

expression involving multiplication are: times, twice,
thrice, doubled, tripled, product, multiplied by.

Examples:
5x = Five times a number x
3y = Thrice y
-4p = Negative four times p
Involving division.

Some of the key terms in translating algebraic expression

involving division are: divided by, quotient, divided into, over
and the ratio.

Examples:
= Four over a number n

= A number b divided by five.

= The quotient of twice a and three
