1. The team of scientists is
working on a groundbreaking
experiment. (Students will answer)
2. Each of the students have
completed their assignments.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL Now, we are going to read a
poem about subject-verb
ACTIVITIES agreement
The sentence symphony
The subject stands, a noble (Students will start reading)
1. Presentation king,
With power to rule, a mighty
thing.
The verb, its servant, must
obey,
In number matching, come what
may.

If singular the subject be,

The verb must sing in harmony.
"He runs," "She walks," "It
sleeps," they say,
A perfect match, come what
may.

But if the subject's plural form,

The verb must join, in a mighty
storm.
"They dance," "We sing," "The
birds fly high,"
In unison, they reach the sky.

Beware the tricksters, lurking

2. Discussion Now class, based from the (Answer may vary)
poem that I have presented
kindly explain this stanza
“If singular the subject be,
The verb must sing in (Answer may vary)
harmony.
"He runs," "She walks," "It
sleeps," they say,
A perfect match, come what
may.”
And also, this one
“But if the subject's plural
form,
The verb must join, in a
mighty storm.
"They dance," "We sing,"
3. Analysis and "The birds fly high,"
In unison, they reach the
Abstraction sky.”

Now, lets us come to

subject-verb agreement.
Subject-verb agreement is a
9 basic rules of subject- (students starts listening)
verb agreement.
1. A singular subject
requires a singular verb. A
plural subject requires a
plural verb. In contrast with
pluralization of nouns
where we are adding s at
the end of the noun, plural
form of the of the verb
doesn’t have ‘s’ at the end.
It is in its base form.
Example: singular verb with
singular subject.

Another example: plural

subject with plural verb.
But there is exemption to
this rule, the pronouns I and
YOU follow a different rule.
An example is:

Both I and YOU are singular,

however, the pronouns I and
YOU always paired with
plural action verbs.

2. Compound subjects
connected by and use a
plural verb.
Example:
When we say compound
subjects, we are pertaining
to two or more subjects.
And because they are more
than one, we are going to
use plural form of the verb.
3. Consider the subject
closer to the verb of two or
more joined by two or more
subjects joined by or or nor.
Example:

When you see the

conjunction or or nor use in
a sentence, you are going to
use the subject, you are
going to use the subject
closest to the verb as a
reference. It will be the one
to determine whether you
are going to use singular or
4. If there is a phrase that
comes between the subject
and the verb, consider the
subject and not the noun or
pronoun in the phrase.
Example:

Subject verb agreement can be

confusing, especially when
there is a phrase between the
subject and the verb. That is
why you need to find first the
subject as you analyze the
sentence. The teacher is our
subject, so we use the singular
form of the word walks we
disregarded the phrase as well
her students because our main
subject is the teacher.
5. Each, each one, either,
neither, everyone, everybody,
anybody, anyone, nobody,
You should keep in mind
that although they might
seem many but we should
use the singular form of
the verb when they are our
subject.

6. Word such as
mathematics, measles,
physics, news and the like
are nouns that end with -s
but are not considered
plural. These nouns require
singular verbs.
Example:

Physics is a difficult
subject.
If you are not sure whether
or not the word that ends
with s is singular, you
should try speaking them
out loud without -s at the
end for example ‘physic,
mathematic’, are there
7. Words such as scissors,
shorts, tweezers, trousers,
shears and the like are
always considered plural.

Example:

Those things always come

in pairs so we should always
use plural form of the verb
when they are used as a
subject.
8. The word here and there
are not subjects. When a
sentence starts with these
words, the subject is placed
after the verb.
Example:
There in the sentence
simply tells something
about the location of the
subject of our sentence
which is my jacket.
If we are going to pluralize
the jacket, we are going to
change in into jackets. We
are going to use are as a
verb so the subject will be
there are my jackets.

9. Team, committee, class,

family, and the like are
collective nouns. In
considering collective nouns
either singular or plural,
you have to analyze how
the verb are use. If the
group acts as one, doing
the same action then the
subject is singular. If the
group acts individually,
doing different thing then
the subject is plural.
Sentence analysis is very
important especially when
dealing with collective nouns as
subject. If they are in
agreement and doing the same
thing, you are going to use
singular form of the verb, but if
they are not in agreement and
the members of the group are
doing different things, you are
going to use the plural form of
the verb.

Agreement

Knowing the nine basic rules of

subject-verb agreement is
