Earthquake Basics for Students

Earthquakes are natural vibrations caused by sudden movements in the Earth's crust, classified as natural hazards due to their potential to cause significant damage and loss of life. They occur primarily at plate boundaries and can trigger tsunamis, which further exacerbate their impact. The document also discusses earthquake measurement, safety measures for buildings, and notable earthquake events with their consequences.

What is an Earthquake?

• Earthquakes are natural

vibrations caused by sudden
movements in the Earth’s
crust, the Earth’s thin outer
layer.
• Earthquakes are a type of
natural hazards.
Can anyone explain what a
natural hazard is?

• Natural hazards are natural events

that cause damage to property (like
houses and farms) people and the
environment.
• Other natural hazards are things like
volcanoes, tsunamis, tornadoes,
hurricanes and floods.
Why are earthquakes called
natural hazards?

• Earthquakes are natural hazards

because the shaking of the Earth’s
surface can cause city buildings to
collapse and injuring and sometimes
killing thousands of people.
