ETHICS AND

CULTURE
LEARNING
OUTCOMES
At the end of this lesson, the student should be
able to
• explain the essential elements of culture;
• analyze the interaction between culture and
ethics; and
• reflect on the specific ways to improve one’s
moral culture.
WHAT IS ETHICS?
• Ethics or moral philosophy is the branch of the
philosophy concerned with conduct and
character.
• The term Ethics is derive from the Greek ethos
meaning ‘custom’ or ‘habit’. Ethics differ from
morals or morality in the sense that ethics
denotes the theory or right action and the
greater good, while morals indicate in their
practice.
WHAT IS
CULTURE
• The complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom,
and any other capabilities and habits
acquired by an individual as a member of
society.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
CULTURE
1. Culture is shared and transmitted.
2. Culture is learned and acquired.
3. Culture is a social phenomenon.
4. Culture gratifies human needs.
5. Culture is dynamic.
6. Culture is integrated.
CULTURAL VIEWS
1. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to
perceive and judge others according to one's
cultural standards. In this cultural view, one
sees his or her culture as the yardstick in
judging the behaviors of others in other social
contexts.
CULTURAL VIEWS
2. Xenocentrism is the tendency to value
other cultures more highly than one's own.
Fascination with others' culture and contempt
for one's own culture can be traced back to a
culture's colonial experience through cultural
brainwashing via media.
CULTURE AND ETHICS
Culture is a shared way of life that varies greatly among
different groups due to diverse origins, beliefs, and
practices. Within any culture, subcultures also exist with
their own unique values. No culture is perfect, and while
some may be seen as more advanced, this does not imply
superiority. Every culture has equal dignity because all
human beings are equal, and cultural imperfections should
motivate us to value all cultures equally. Ethical theories
and perspectives, which vary between and within cultures,
are crucial for understanding morality and ensuring
peaceful coexistence through moral norms.
ORGANIZATIONAL
CULTURE AND ETHICS
Organizational culture dictates unspoken ethical
standards influencing employee behavior, while
formal ethical codes represent the explicit rules.
Conflicts arise when these two diverge, highlighting
the importance of aligning informal cultural norms
with formal ethical guidelines for a strong ethical
organizational culture.
NATIONAL CULTURE AND
ETHICS
The cultural ideals, values, and practices of a country
influence the culture of an organization. The knowledge and
values of the society to which the founder, leaders, and
members belong, are adapted and become the heart and
soul of the organization. If the national culture is highly
competitive, the organization is likely to be competitive.
