• Each family is unique due to the blending of
factors that influence behaviors and interactions
among family

1. Procreation – the duty to have
children / procreate. Along with it is
the parents’ duty to provide and
raise children

2. Economic provision – caring for their


needs over and above the basics:
food, shelter, and clothing
“Education remains one of the perfect

3. Love – while material provision
matters a lot, it does not solely answer
an individual’s needs. Love holds the
most significance in the family. It is the
best gift.

with the family members, with other
people that the family associates with.

Sense of Security – family offers

are busy discovering themselves, they
will still need a ‘secure base’

- The traditional type of
family
- Two parents and their
children living together as

EXTENDED FAMILY
- Aside from the two parents
and their children, the
family is joined by relatives
who live with them like
grandparents, cousins,

Parents
- Both parents are working
to support the family
- Some parents are even
working abroad and
children are often left with
their grandparents which
may pose a significant
challenge for the family
Single-Parent Family
- The mother or the father
alone cares for the child or
children
- In cases of separation, the
children are usually left to
either one of the parents
- Sometimes caused by the
demise one spouse, the other
being nil, or having children
without getting married
Blended Family
- Consists of a couple in which
one or both have children
from a previous marriage or
relationship
- In many instances, happens
when there is a separation
that leads to remarriage

- Some couples live together as common-law or
domestic partners
- They are not legally married but live together
to share household responsibilities, they can
adopt or take care of a child from previous

Child-rearing – the kind of parenting
style exercised by parents. The patterns
or ways in which parents raise their
children.
Authoritarian
◊ Characterized by rigid or
demanding parenting style
◊ Parents are stringent and
expect their children to follow
them without question
◊ They do not tolerate
misbehavior and do not
hesitate to apply punishment
to control behavior
Permissive
◊ Parents of this nature are very
giving to the point of spoiling
the children
◊ Tend to be warm and loving,
and tend to have few
limitations
◊ They allow children to be part
of family decisions
Authoritative
◊ Parents are authority figures
who set clear expectations for
their children
◊ They set reasonable
limitations, yet they also give
them room for independence
and provide emotional
