Discussion
St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17th, marks the death of
Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. Born in Britain in the 4th
century, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as
a slave. After escaping, he went back to his homeland.
Later, he became a missionary and returned to Ireland to spread
Christianity, using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.
Originally a religious holiday, it was observed with church services
and feasts. As Irish immigrants moved abroad, especially to the
U.S., it evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture, featuring
parades, music, and public festivities.
