CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field in education,
transforming the way students learn and interact with technology. It
has applications in personalized learning, automated tasks, and
providing insights into student performance. AI-based adaptive
learning platforms, for example, offer personalized learning
experiences and real-time feedback on grammar, punctuation, and
style. The field has also been linked to improved academic
performance, with studies showing a correlation between parental
involvement and academic success.
However, there is limited research on the long-term effects
of AI tools on students' academic performance, particularly
in areas like mathematics, science, and language arts. This
study aims to explore the impact of AI on Grade 11 ICT
learners at Saint Aloysius Institute of Technology (SAIT) and
its potential impacts on equity in education. The study
aims to provide insights into the ethical implications of AI
use in academic tasks and the potential impact of AI on
students' learning gaps.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
AI has significantly impacted undergraduate students' cognitive abilities, including
IQ and attention span. The Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory of cognition suggests
that AI can both facilitate and detriment cognitive development. While AI tools
can increase efficiency and knowledge acquisition, they also pose limitations in
critical thinking, creativity, and focus.
The study found a tripartite relationship between AI and IQ, with AI tools favoring
crystallized intelligence (Gc) by increasing access to vast information and aiding
in the growth of databases. However, the positive impact of AI could be
counterproductive to fluid intelligence (Gf), which is seen as critical thinking,
problem-solving, and creative thinking.
AI also reduced attention span among students, making it difficult for
them to focus on laborious tasks like reading. This trend is particularly
observable in Generation Z, who have been surrounded by digital devices
throughout their lives. Excessive use of AI services and/or multitasking
may prevent them from applying themselves to serious, concentrated
learning.
The study aims to reveal the relationships between various dimensions of
using AI and the variations in cognitive development observed in
underwear students. While AI can augment learning efficiency and
facilitate knowledge acquisition, it presents a threat to the development of
students' intellect, especially in sectors requiring effort, critical thinking,
and creativity.

SCOPE AND
Scop DELIMITATIONS
e
This study examines how artificial intelligence (AI) influences
academic achievement levels of Grade 11 ICT SAIT learners through
positive and negative effects. This investigation studies AI
transformations that affect three educational elements comprising
teaching approaches and student evaluation processes and school
administration procedures that operate for these student
populations. A semi-structured interview approach serves as the
main research method for obtaining key information about selected
participant opinions through their experiences.
The research includes only students from grade 11 at SAIT during
their academic year in order to make the findings both pertinent and
specific to the context.
Delimitation
s
The research analyzes academic achievement outcomes of Grade
11 ICT students at SAIT while omitting other institutional and grade
level populations. This research does not explore how Artificial
Intelligence will affect learners in the long run or how it influences
various aspects beyond test results including emotional well-being
and social effects. The research employs interviews as the primary
data collection method including surveys or observational studies
within its scope.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
PARTICIPANTS/
RESPONDENTS
The study "Exploring the Influence of AI on the Academic Performance
of Grade 11 ICT Learners at Saint Aloysius Institute of Technology (SAIT)"
explores the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on students' academic
performance. The research uses a qualitative approach with a
phenomenological design, involving 14 Grade 11 ICT students (7 boys and
7 girls) who have relevant experience and knowledge about AI in their
academic activities. The study uses a phenomenological approach to
capture the personal narratives and perspectives of the participants,
providing a comprehensive understanding of how AI influences their
academic performance. This method aligns with the study's aim to explore
the complex connection between AI-assisted learning and academic
outcomes.
RESEARCH DESIGN
This study uses a combination of descriptive and qualitative
research methods to investigate the impact of Artificial
Intelligence on Grade 11 student academic performance. The
descriptive research analyzes observed phenomena, while the
phenomenological methodology studies students' actual
educational experiences. The exploratory capabilities of
phenomenology make it an ideal method for studying subject
experiences and their meanings during AI tool engagement. This
comprehensive approach provides valuable insights and future
practice recommendations on AI's impact on education.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
The research design employs purposive sampling to
select subjects who meet research goals, specifically Grade
11 students at Saint Aloysius Institute of Technology. This
non-probability approach ensures data collection from
qualified respondents, ensuring they can make meaningful
contributions to the study. Purposive sampling ensures the
study's success and contributes to the understanding of
the subject matter.
DATA COLLECTION
The researchers ensured that the interview guide was well-prepared and
aligned with the objectives of the study before conducting the
interviews.
Assuring participants that their answers would be kept confidential, the
researchers explained the interview process clearly and proceeded with
the interviews.
Participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique,
targeting Grade 11 ICT learners from Saint Aloysius Institute of
Technology who were knowledgeable and experienced in using AI tools
for academic purposes. This method ensured that the participants could
provide meaningful and relevant insights related to the research
objectives.
The interviews happened at the school in a quiet and relaxed
environment, so promoting honest discussion and fostering a
corporate feeling.
The researchers used a systematic approach of questioning in
interviews to get the required data. The investigator writes down
the interview results' findings.
RESEARCH
The study ANALYSIS
utilized Colaizzi's seven-step method for
phenomenological analysis, focusing on the effects of
artificial intelligence on student academic results. The
researchers identified and recorded significant statements,
analyzed them to extract essential meanings, and grouped
them into thematic clusters. These themes were used to
describe the phenomenon and refine the core AI experiences
reported by students. The findings were validated by
participants to ensure accurate and reliable study outcomes.
