 The rapid development of technology, urbanization, and social changes have led to a shift
in consumer habits , resulting in the consumption of ready to eat food this fast food diet,
which includes hamburgers toast pita bread, lahmacun, doner, wraps pizza and
sandwiches is a definition of urban food culture . With globalization industrial fast food
has become more widespread, particularly among children , young people, and university
student. Nutrition problems are a significant concern for these groups emphasizing the
importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during childhood and adolescence.

This study analyzes fast-food consumption habits among Istanbul university students,

examining factors like gender, age, and income, and evaluating health, convenience, and social

interaction to maintain a healthy diet.

This study investigates Istanbul students' fast-food consumption habits

using convenience sampling, with 100 selected students selected for the

2023-2024 academic year. Data was collected through a face-to-face

survey and social media surveys.

 Fast food has become a common dietary choice


among young people today. In this analysis, we
examined the fast food preferences of young
people aged 7-25 and the reasons behind these
preferences. Based on survey data, we assessed
the reasons why young people prefer fast food
and the various dimensions of these
preferences, such as age, emotional influences,
healthy options, physical/financial influences,
consumption habits and reduction challenges

Preference Frequency by Age Groups

Age seems to affect fast food preference. The survey data


shows that young people between the ages of 19-22 prefer
fast food more often per week. This suggests that young
people tend to turn to fast food more as they mature and
move towards independent lifestyles

Reasons for Preference

Convenience, taste and affordable prices are the main

factors driving fast food preference among young people.

Under fast-paced lifestyles and economic conditions, young

people are in search of easily accessible, low-cost and

delicious food.

Emotional Reactions

. While fast food consumption often evokes feelings of happiness and

relaxation, some young people feel guilt and unhealthiness after

consumption. This suggests that fast food consumption among young

people is an emotional experience and causes a variety of emotional

responses

Healthy Choices and Preferences

Only a small proportion of young people prefer healthy options in

fast food restaurants. This shows that young people generally prefer

fast food for convenience and taste and that awareness of healthy

eating is not yet widespread.

Physical and Financial Impacts

The majority of young people consider the physical and financial

impacts of fast food consumption. In particular, concerns about the

risk of weight gain and low energy play an important role in their

understanding of the impact of fast food on their health and financial

situation.

Consumption Habits and Conveniences

The main reason for spending time in fast food restaurants is usually

to eat. This suggests that young people generally see fast food as a

quick meal and prefer it for nutrition rather than social interaction.

The Challenge of Reduction

The rate of those who think that reducing fast food

consumption is difficult for young people is quite high. This

reflects that fast food consumption is a strong habit among

young people and that it is difficult to transition to a healthy

lifestyle.
conclusion

 A study of 100 Istanbul-based students found that 93% consumed fast-food at


different intervals, causing health issues and not meeting growth and development
needs. Factors such as friends' guidance, short lunch hours, and short class
intervals were key reasons. Most students believe fast-food consumption is
harmful, leading to obesity, bad cholesterol, and increased blood sugar levels.
Over half of the students have not taken measures against obesity, raising
concerns about their development and future health.
