OBEDIENCE AS
AN ACT OF LOVE
1 John 2:4-6
1 John 2:4-6
Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do
what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not
in that person.
But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is
truly made complete in them. This is how we
know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in
him must live as Jesus did.
• In this passage, Apostle John
emphasizes that obedience is
one of the strongest evidences
that a person truly loves God.
"The greatest test of life
is obedience to God."
- Ezra Taft Benson
Many Christians claim
that they are in Christ
Jesus but does not obey
Him.
Abraham
A Model of Unwavering
Faith and Obedience
•Command from God: Sacrifice his son
Isaac (Genesis 22:1-2).
•Difficulty: Isaac was the son of promise.
•Response: Abraham obeyed without
hesitation, trusting God completely
(Genesis 22:3-10).
Jesus
The Perfect Model of
Unwavering Faith and
Obedience
•Just as Jesus Christ did, He showed
us that He truly loved His Heavenly
Father through obedience. Even
though His obedience led to
suffering, He still chose to obey His
Heavenly Father's command.
• Therefore, the strongest
evidence of our claim that we
are in Christ Jesus, our Lord
and Savior, is our obedience
to His commands.
Common Commands
from God That Are
Difficult for Us to
Follow
1. Seek First the Kingdom of God
(Matthew 6:33) – Prioritize God above
all else, trusting Him to provide.
Difficult because we often focus on
material needs and personal goals.
2. Love God with All Your Heart
(Matthew 22:37) – Fully surrender to
God in love and obedience. Difficult
because we are tempted to love other
things—comfort, success, or people—
more than God.
3. Remain in Jesus (John 15:5) – Stay
connected to Him through prayer, His
Word, and obedience. Difficult
because busyness, temptations, and
struggles can weaken our faith.
4. Do Not Conform to the World
(Romans 12:2) – Live by God’s truth,
not worldly values. Difficult because
peer pressure and societal trends push
us to compromise our faith.
5. Make Disciples and Share the
Gospel (Matthew 28:19-20) – Spread
the gospel and help others grow in
faith. Difficult because fear, insecurity,
or busyness often hold us back.
Obedience is not difficult
if we truly love God, but
it becomes difficult if we
do not truly love Him.
QUESTIONS:
1. Which command from God do you personally
find the hardest to follow, and why?
2. Can you share a time when you struggled to
obey God? What did you do, and what was the
result?
3. How has obedience to God deepened your
love for Him and strengthened your faith?
