Background of the
project
• Energy Crisis in Ethiopia:
56% lack electricity; 90% rely on biomass fuels.
Deforestation:
78,600 hectares lost in 2023.
• Agricultural Waste Potential:
192,000 tons/year of coffee husk discarded.
• Sawdust from wood industry wasted.
• Solution: Briquettes from coffee husk +sawdust
+ clay binder.
3
Statement of the problem
• Agricultural waste pollution
(coffee husk, sawdust).
• people relying on harmful fuels
like wood and charcoal.
• Large number of child deaths
from indoor air pollution (ARI).
• Limitations of
Existing briquette technology.
• Energy scarcity
4
Objective of the study
General Objective:
To Design and Characterize briquette's produced from coffee husk, sawdust and clay soil as a binder.
Specific objective:
To assess the potential of coffee husks and sawdust as biomass feedstocks.
To experimentally evaluate the best binder-to-feedstock ratio for producing high-quality briquettes.
To model and make static FEA simulation of the manual press briquette machine.
To develop a prototype of the manual press briquette machine.
To analyze the thermal and physical characteristics of the produced briquette.
5
Expected outcomes
The produced briquettes will have:
• An approximate density of 900-950 kg/m³ and an energy content(CV) of 20-25 MJ/kg.
• A mass of 5 Kg and burn rate of 0.4–0.8 kg/hour. which should be at least 40-50% more
efficient than firewood.
• Reduced smoke emission (70–75% less than firewood)
• Lower CO emission (50-55%) than fire wood.
• Sufficient compressive strength, ensuring they are durable enough for transportation and
storage.
6
Expected outcomes
The manual press briquette machine will have:
• A minimum production capacity of 20 briquettes per hour with a single operator and
machine under normal conditions.
• Easy to operate and maintain.
• Cost effective and durable.
• At least 70% more efficient than traditionally hand-molded briquettes.
• Create jobs in local communities through the establishment of small-scale briquette
production businesses.
• Aiming for a user satisfaction rate of 85% in post launch surveys.
