Q3 Module 1 Volcanoes Part 1

The document provides an overview of different types of volcanoes, including Cinder Cone, Shield, and Composite (Stratovolcano) volcanoes, detailing their structures, characteristics, and examples. Cinder Cone volcanoes are the most common and less dangerous, while Shield volcanoes have broad, flat shapes and less explosive eruptions. Composite volcanoes are the most picturesque yet deadly, characterized by explosive eruptions and a complex structure formed from alternating lava and pyroclastic deposits.

Module 1: Different Types of Volcanoes

TYPES OF VOLCANO based on structure

A. CINDER CONE volcano or ash-cinder volcano.

1. This is the most common
type of volcano and
relatively less dangerous
2. Only grows to about 1,000-1,200
feet tall and are usually created
from a single opening.

A. CINDER CONE volcano

3. The opening is a cone-

shaped structure, while the
steeps are formed of the
erupted, fragmented cinders
that fall close to the
chimney/vent.

4. They are built from

ejected lava fragments.
They have a steep slope,
wide crater and are the
most abundant of the
three major volcano
types.

B. Shield Volcano
1. Shield volcanoes are formed
by the accumulation of lava that
oozes out from the volcano.

2. Since non-viscous lava

can flow freely, a broad,
slightly domed structure
that resembles a warrior’s
shield is formed.

TYPES OF VOLCANO based on structure
B. Shield Volcano
3. Shield volcanoes can be tall because of their
ample supply of magma, but tend to be very
broad, flat, rounded shapes, with less steep
slopes. Eruptions at shield volcanoes are only
explosive if water somehow gets into the vent.

C. Composite Volcano or
Stratovolcano
1. Theyare the most
picturesque and the most-
deadly of the volcano types.
2. They are large, nearly
perfect sloped structure
formed from alternate
solidification of both lava and
pyroclastic deposits.

TYPES OF VOLCANO based on structure
C. Composite Volcano or
Stratovolcano
3. One important feature of
a composite volcano is the
conduit system from which
magma rises to the surface
of the Earth. They are
formed from viscous, or
sticky, lava that does not
flow easily.

C. Composite Volcano
4.Their eruptions are dangerous
and explosive in nature, with
many layers of lava and
pyroclastic materials, the
current of rock and gas that can
reach 1,800°F and 450 mph,
killing any living organism in its
path immediately.

Are you familiar with Pacific Ocean Ring of
Fire? What is your idea about this?
Pacific Ocean Ring of Fire or Circum-Pacific Belt
The Ring of Fire is an area around the Pacific
Ocean where 70% of the volcanoes are located
and 90% of the earthquakes occur. It is a
horseshoe-shaped belt about 40,000 km long and up
to about 500 km wide.
Assign. 3.1
1. How many volcanoes are found in
Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao?
2. How many are active and inactive
volcanoes
