ASSESSMENT IN

LEARNING
Learning Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
• Identify
1 the five (5) types of True or False Test
Type after the class discussion.
• Explain the importance of following the
principles and guidelines in making a True or
False type of test.
• Construct True or False type test items following
the given principles and guidelines
ACTIVITY: True or False Challenge

We will flash some sample statements

related to general knowledge and you will
identify if the statements are True or False.
1. Water is made up of two
hydrogen atoms and one oxygen
atom.
Answer: True
2. Sharks are classified as fish, not
mammals.

Answer: True
3. Albert Einstein invented the light
bulb.

Answer: False
4. Lightning is a form of electricity.

Answer: True
5. The human heart has four
chambers.
Answer: True
ANALYSIS:

• How was the activity?

• What have you observed on the
following questions?
• What is your preliminary understanding
of writing a True or False Question?
TYPES AND PRINCIPLES OF
MAKING A TRUE OR FALSE
QUESTION
What is a True or False Test Type?
• True-false test items are typically used to measure the ability
to identify whether or not the statements of facts are correct.
• The basic format is simply a declarative statement that the
student must judge as true or false.
• No modifications of this basic form in which the student
must respond "YES" or "NO,” “AGREE" or "DISAGREE."
(Gronlund, 1998)
ACTIVITY:
“The More, The Merrier- True or False Edition”
Procedure:
1. We will group the class into four by counting method.
2. Each group will make True or False Questions on the three most commonly used
type which are:
Simple True or False
Modified True or False
Cluster True or False
3. The groups will only make Science related questions, those unrelated will
automatically not count.
4. You will only be given 5 minutes to provide examples in the provided A4 bond paper
for each type. Cooperation of the group is a must.
5.Someone from the group will share to the class what strategy and principles they
applied to effectively make True or False Questions.
6.The group with the most examples provided will win the game and will get the most
points.
GENERALIZATION:

• What are the different kinds of true or false

questions?
• What principles should be followed when
constructing a true or false question?
• Why is it important to follow these principles?
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF TRUE
OR FALSE TEST
1. SIMPLE TRUE OR FALSE

Directly answer whether a statement is true

1
or false.
Example:
The sun is the center of the solar system.
Water boils at 50°C under normal atmospheric pressure.
2. MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE

If a statement is false, identify the

1
incorrect part and provide the
correct word or phrase to make it
true.
EXAMPLES

• Plants produce oxygen during

photosynthesis. (True)
• The heart is responsible for
producing insulin in the human
body. (False – The pancreas is
responsible for producing insulin.)
3. CLUSTER TRUE OR FALSE?

A set of related statements are

presented,
1 and you need to mark
each one as true or false
individually, often assessing your
understanding of a concept as a
whole.
EXAMPLES

• The three states of matter are solid, liquid,

and gas. (True)
• Plasma is not considered a state of matter.
(False – Plasma is the fourth state of matter.)
• DNA carries genetic information. (True)
• Proteins are the primary genetic material in
cells. (False – DNA is the primary genetic
material.)
4. TRUE OR FALSE WITH
OPTIONS

Instead
1
of just "true" or
"false," you choose the
correct answer from a set of
multiple options.
EXAMPLES

The largest planet in our solar system is

Earth. (False)
a) Jupiter
b) Mars
c) Venus
d) Saturn
(Correct answer: a.) Jupiter)
5. FACT OR OPINION TRUE OR FALSE

Determine if a statement is a
1
verifiable fact that can be proven
true or false, or if it's a personal
opinion that cannot be objectively
verified.
EXAMPLES

• The human body contains 206

bones. (Fact – True)
• Physics is the most interesting
branch of science. (Opinion –
False)
PRINCIPLES IN
CONSTRUCTING TRUE OR
FALSE QUESTIONS
(PAYNE,1984)?
WHAT ARE THE GUIDING
PRINCIPLES IN MAKING A
TRUE OR FALSE QUESTION ?
• Near-sightedness is
hereditary in origin.
• Geneticists and eye
specialists believe that the
predisposition to near-
sightedness is hereditary.
1. Based true-false items
upon statements that are
absolutely true or false,
without qualifications or
exceptions.
• When you see a highway with a
marker that reads: "Interstate 80,"
you know that the construction
and upkeep of that road is built
and maintained by the local and
national government.
• The construction and the
maintenance of the interstate
highways are provided by both
local and national government.
2. Express the items
statement as simply as
clearly as possible.
• Water will boil at a higher temperature
if the atmospheric pressure on its
surface is increased and more heat is
applied to the container.
• Water will boil at a higher temperature
if the atmospheric pressure on its
surface is increased. Or water will boil
at a higher temperature if more heat
is applied to the container.
3. Express a single idea in
each test item.
• The second principle of
education is that the
individual gathers
knowledge.
• According to John Dewey,
the second principle of
education is that the
individual gathers
knowledge.
4. Include enough
background information and
qualifications so that the
ability to respond correctly
to the item does not depend
on some special, uncommon
knowledge.
• The second principle of
education is that the
individual gathers
knowledge.
• According to John Dewey,
the second principle of
education is that the
individual gathers
knowledge.
5. Avoid lifting statements
from the text, lecture or
other materials so that
memory alone will not
permit a correct answer.
• The Supreme Court is
not composed of nine
justices.
• The Supreme court is
composed of nine
justices.
6. Avoid using negatively
stated item statements.
(Double Negatives)
• According to some
politicians, the raison
d'etre for capital
punishment is retribution.
• According to some
politicians, justification for
the existence of capital
punishment is retribution.
7. Avoid the use of
unfamiliar vocabulary.
• Each molecule of a given compound is
chemically the same as every other
molecule of that compound. (T)
• All sessions of congress are called by
the President. (F)
• The Supreme Court is frequently
required to rule on the
constitutionality of the law. (T)
• The objective test is generally easier
to score than an easy test. (T)
8. Avoid the use of specific determiners which
should permit a test wise but unprepared
examinee to respond correctly.
• Specific determiners refer to sweeping terms
like all, always, none never, impossible,
inevitable. Statements including such terms
are likely to be false.
• On the other hand, statements using
qualifying determiners such as usually,
sometimes, often, are likely to be true. When
statements require specific determiners,
make sure they appear in both true and false
items.

answer .

question requires students to:
a. Choose between two answers
