Rotating Magnetic Field
• Balanced three phase windings, i.e. mechanically displaced 120
degrees form each other, fed by balanced three phase source
• A rotating magnetic field with constant magnitude is produced,
rotating with a speed
• The figure shows the schematic representation of three-phase
positive sequence coils. Assume that they are excited from a balanced
three-phase positive sequence current given by:

• The total mmf distribution can be obtained by summing the mmfs of

the three coils. Each coil can be considered to be a single-phase.
Therefore mmf of each phase can be expressed as follows:
The following instants are shown.
(a) At wt =0
Fa= Fm
Fb= - Fm/2
Fc = - Fm/2

(b) At wt = 60
Fa= Fm/2
Fb= Fm/2
Fc= - Fm

(c) At wt = 120
Fa= - Fm/2
Fb= Fm
Fc= - Fm/2

Single Phase Induction Motor
• The single-phase induction machine is the most frequently used
motor for refrigerators, washing machines, clocks, drills,
compressors, pumps, and so forth.
• The single-phase motor stator has a laminated iron core with two
windings arranged perpendicularly.
• One is the main and
• The other is the auxiliary winding or starting winding
