A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO START USING ETABS
PRESENTED BY: [MUSTAFA]
Introduction
What is ETABS?
- ETABS (Extended Three-Dimensional Analysis
of Building Systems) is a sophisticated
structural analysis and design software
developed by Computers and Structures, Inc.
(CSI).
- Used for designing and analyzing building
structures, ETABS incorporates various
functionalities to handle the entire workflow
from modeling to analysis to design.
Why Use ETABS?
Benefits of ETABS:
- User-friendly interface
- Comprehensive modeling tools
- Advanced analysis capabilities
- Extensive design features
- Integration with other software
- Reliable and widely-used in the industry
Creating a New Model
Steps to Create a New Model:
1. Start a New Project: Open ETABS and select
“New Model” from the File menu.
ETABS Settings
ETABS provides 3 options for creating settings
ETABS Settings
1ST Option - “USER SAVED USER DEFAULT
SETTINGS”
1) This option uses the default settings in ETABS.
Default settings can be modified and saved as per
user requirements. This option is helpful if the
similar settings are used frequently. (Refer next
slide for video)

Types of Loads:
- Dead Loads: Permanent loads due to the
structure’s weight.
- Live Loads: Variable loads such as occupancy
or furniture.
- Wind Loads: Lateral loads due to wind forces.
- Seismic Loads: Dynamic loads due to
earthquake activity.
Running the Analysis
Designing Elements:
- Concrete Design: Design beams, columns,
slabs, and walls based on relevant codes.
- Steel Design: Design steel members and
connections.
- Optimization: Optimize member sizes and
reinforcement details for efficiency and
economy.
Output and Reports
Generating Reports:
- Create detailed analysis and design reports.
- Customize report content to include relevant
data and results.
- Export reports in various formats (PDF, Word,
Excel).
Tips for Beginners
Helpful Tips:
- Start Simple: Begin with simple models to
understand the basics.
- Explore Tutorials: Utilize online tutorials and
resources.
- Practice Regularly: Build different types of
models to gain experience.
- Join Forums: Participate in user forums and
discussion groups for support.
Resources
Additional Resources:
- Official ETABS Documentation: Comprehensive
guides and manuals.
- Online Courses: Platforms like Coursera,
Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning.
- Community Forums: ETABS user forums,
Reddit, and LinkedIn groups.
- YouTube Channels: Tutorials and walkthroughs
by experienced users.
