DEFINITION
Application software consists of programs designed to make users more
productive and/or assist with personal tasks .
It performs tasks such as:
• To make business activities more efficient
• To assist with graphics and multimedia projects
• To support home, personal, and educational tasks
• To facilitate communications
FORMS OF APPLICATION SOFTWARE:
• Packaged software is a collection of programs that perform similar
functions or have similar features. For example, Microsoft Office includes multiple
applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint..
• Custom software development is the process of designing, creating,
deploying and maintaining software for a specific set of users, functions or
organizations.
• Shareware is software that is distributed free on a trial basis with the understanding that
the user may need or want to pay for it later.
• Freeware Computer software that is available for use with no cost or for an optional fee.
• Public domain software is any software that has no legal, copyright or
editing restrictions associated with it. SQLite, I2P and CERN httpd are popular examples of
public domain software
• Open software is a term that originally referred to open source software (OSS). Open
source software is code that is designed to be publicly accessible—anyone can see,
modify, and distribute the code as they see fit.
• Web application (Web app) is an application program that is stored on a remote
server and delivered over the Internet through a browser interface. Web services are
Web apps by definition and many, although not all, websites contain Web apps.
• Mobile application (also called a mobile app) is a type of application designed to
run on a mobile device, which can be a smartphone or tablet computer.
• Portable application (portable app) is a software product designed to be easily
moved from one computing environment to another. They include portable versions of
regular applications – such as browsers, for example – as well as specialized apps designed
to enhance mobile computing.
Software installation upgrades and updates:
A software update, which is sometimes called a software patch, is not the same thing as a
software upgrade. An update is generally an enhancement to the current version of the software
or application, while an upgrade is a whole new version of it. Updates are usually free and
simple to install.
Productivity software:
Productivity software is a category of application programs that help users produce things such
as documents, databases, graphs, worksheets and presentations. Many productivity
applications are intended for business use.
• Spreadsheet software is a computer application for computation,
organization, analysis and storage of data in tabular form. Spreadsheets were developed as
computerized analogs of paper accounting worksheets.
• Word processing software is a computer program that lets you type words or
text which shows up in a virtual "document" on your computer screen which can, in turn, be
printed or sent electronically. Microsoft Word is an example of word processing software.
• Presentation software is defined as computer programs designed to allow the
user to present information in an engaging way such as with text, pictures, sound and video.
PowerPoint is an example of a presentation software.
• Database software is a software program or utility used for creating, editing
and maintaining database files and records. This type of software allows users to store
data in the form of structured fields, tables and columns, which can then be retrieved directly
and/or through programmatic access.
• Software suite is a collection of computer programs of related functionality, sharing a
similar user interface and the ability to easily exchange data with each other .
• Accounting software is a computer program that assists accountants in recording
and reporting a firm's financial transactions. Different firms have different accounting
software needs. Some may only need generic, off the shelf accounting software, while
others will need customized, complex accounting software.
Graphics and multimedia software creates, edits, and manages two-dimensional
images. These computer graphics may be clip art, web graphics, logos, headings, backgrounds,
digital photos, or other kinds of digital images
