FEELINGS AND MORAL DECISION-MAKING
FASHION GENERAL
√ Feelings refers to the nominalization of the
verb to feel.
√ It is also used to describe experiences other
than physical sensation of touch as "a feeling of
warmth" and of sentience in general.
√ The word was first used in the English
language to describe the physical sensation of
touch through either perception or experience.
Feelings in latin "Sentire" meant to feel, hear,
or smell. In general, it is an emotional state or
reaction experience of physical sensation like
feeling of joy, warmth,love etc.
Moral decision-making is about determining
the "right" course of action when faced with
choices that have ethical dimensions.
Influence on Decision-Making
Emotions can influence both the nature and
speed of moral decisions.
Example:1.
One sticker in a truck says: "If it feels good, do
it." What does this mean? Is this always right?
Example: 2.
Here are the stateents from a Filipina OFW in the
USA.
"I will never be able to forgive my self if I won't fly
home to be with my family in my fathe's death. I
may not be able to talk to him anymore, you may
find it impractical and unreasonable but I have to
fly home. If I don't, I will not feel whole at all.
If you were the Filipina nurse, would you decide
and act the same way? Why?
Feelings are instinctive and
trained response to
moral dilemma.
Plato- He would argue that the function of
reason is to rule the appetites and emotions.
Three components of the soul
1.Rational soul
2.Spirited soul
3.Appetetive soul
"Several studies conclude that up to 90 percent
of the decision we made are based on emotion.
We use logic to justify our actions to ourselves
and to others."
"Researches also show that Actual emotional
states can influence the process of moral
reasoning and determine moral judgement."
WHY THEY CAN BE OBSTACLE
TO MAKING THE RIGHT
DECISION
They often arise automatically and can
cloud our judgment, leading to impulsive
choices based on emotions rather than a
rational analysis of all available information,
Example:
Pretend that you are
walking in the street.
You see this young man
begging for food and
money.
How are you going to
help?
According to recent research,
feelings/emotions have negative effect on
decision making.
•We make quick decisions without knowing why.
•Intensity of emotions can override rational
decision-making.
•Create mistakes by distorting and creating bias
in judgment.
•Projected emotions can lead to errors.
How to mitigate the impact
of feelings on decision-
making
Take time to reflect -Pause before making a
decision to allow emotions to settle and consider
all perspectives.
Identify your emotions- Recognize how your
feelings are influencing your decision-making
process.
Seek external perspectives -Discuss the
situation with a trusted friend or colleague to
gain a different viewpoint.
Focus on facts -Gather relevant information
and analyze the situation logically.
HOW THEY CAN HELP IN MAKING THE
RIGHT DECISIONS
•A totally emoptional decision is very fast in
comparison to a rational decision.
•useful when faced in immediate danger.
•Emotions may provide a way for coding and
compacting experience.
•Decisions that start with logic may need
emotions to enable the final selection.
According to some Linguistic pilosophers, called
(emotivists) the statement "stealing is wrong"
is not a statement of fact, it is an expression of
a desire or emotion. The rule of maxim,
"stealing is wrong" means "I desire that you do
not steal."
