• Democracy, in which the counry is governed by represantives of the people and
Parliament
• official head of state is the sovereign-King Charles III.
• Unitary state=>all four countries of the UK are represented in Parliament at Westminster
in London
• Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all have governing bodies that work exclusively on
issues in their own countries
• The constitution is made up of: 1)statue law(acts of Parliament)
2)common law(law of precedent)
3)conventions(Europian legislation)
• Political power is divided into three branches:legislative, executive, judicial

• Consists of 650 salaried members


• Elected for 5 years
• Each member represents a constituency
• Chief officer-Speaker
• Main fuctions-are debating, passing laws and examiningthe actions of the
Goverment, regulations governing the UK
The British Goverment
• Is the supreme executive authority
• Consist of the Prime Minister, who is leader of the Govermen party
and other ministers
• The goverment is answerable to Parliament
• Consist of over 80 members
• Executive power is in the hands of the Cabinet->group of about 20
ministers, chosen by Prime Minister from the members of his party
The Sovereign-the King
• Formal head of the UK and the Commonwealth(British
Commonwealth of Nations), the Armed Forces, the system of justice
and of the Anglican Church
• Formally summons Parliament and has also the right to dissolve it
and signs laws
The Judicial branch
• Is headed by the Highest court made up of 10 law lords, who are
members of the House of Lords
Political parties
• The Conservative Party-They would like to reduce income tax and the
give a high priority to national defence and internal law and order
• The Labour Party-stands for equality, for the social weaker people and
for more government involvment in the economical issues
• The Liberal Democratic Party-fall between the Conservatives and
Labour
