Convex lenses

Task A: Creating an image on a blank screen

Make an approximate measurement of the focal length (f ) of a lens.

1) Collect a convex lens, a ruler and a blank sheet window


of paper then dim the lighting in the room.

2) Identify a bright object (e.g. a lamp, or an


object outside a window on a bright day) that is
at least 1.5 m away, so should be many times
further away than the focal length of the lens. f

3) Hold up the lens between the distant object and the paper, then adjust the
distance between the lens and the paper until a clear image forms on the paper.

4) Ask another person to measure this distance, which will be equal to the focal
length of the lens to a good approximation.

Task B: Investigating the images formed by a convex lens

1) Set up the equipment as shown (incl. a power supply and wires) then dim the
room lighting.

2) Place the screen at a distance equal to the focal length (f ) of the lens (found in
Task A). This is the image distance (where an image should appear) if the
object is ‘distant’ from the lens.

3) Using trial and improvement, adjust the position of the bulb to find the
greatest object distance that produces a sharp, bright image on the screen
when the screen is at a distance of (or close to) f.

4) Record your results in a table (as shown below).

5) Slowly move the bulb closer to the lens, reducing the object distance, until
there is a measurable change in the image distance (1 cm or more).

6) Record the new results in your table, then repeat step 5 until the object is
within one focal length of the lens, (if possible).
