[Link] matrix composites
1.1What are composites?
Composites are the materials made
by combining two or more
different material to creat a new
material with enhanced properties
It consists of matrix and
reinforcement

1.2 Metal matrix
composite
Metal matrix composites are the
materials made by combining a
metal matrix with a
reinforcement material like Figure 1.1 Metal matrix composites

material with enhanced
properties

Used due to its light weight,
Corrrosion resistence Figure 1.2 Aluminium MMc's
Used in aerospace

2.1.2Titanium metal matrix
Used due to excellent hight
temperature performance and good
corrosion resistence

2.2.2 Fibre reinforced MMc’s
Metal matrix with fibres reinforced
2.2.3 Contineous fibre reinforced
Metal matrix with continues fibres (long
fibre)
2.2.4 Discontineous fibre reinforced
Metal matrix with discontinuous
fibres(short fibres)
8
2.2.5 Hybrid Reinforcement MMc’s
Metal matrix with combination of
different reinforcement material like
particles fibre etc

Wetting
It involves only the mixing of two components
Mixing
Another component is added to make a blend
Bonding
Both matrix and resinforcement bond together by a
glue or any other adhesive material

4. Processes
4.1 Stir Casting
Stir casting is a method to
make metal matrix composites
by mixing metal with small
particles (like ceramics).
It’s a simple and low-cost Figure 1.4 Stir casting in metals
method used in industries.
11
4.2 Diffusion bonding
Diffusion bonding is a method used
to join metal matrix composites
(MMCs) without melting them.
It involves stacking layers of metal
and reinforcement materials, then
applying high heat and pressure to
bond them at the atomic level. Figure 1.5 Difussion bonding
12
4.3 Spray forming
Molten metal and reinforcement
particle are sprayed on a substate
forming a composite layer
4.4 Liquid metal infilteration
In this case, spaces between
reinforcement fibers is filled Figure 1.6 Liquid metal infilteration
with molten metal

5. Properties
5.1 Corrosion Resistence
Some MMCs have improved corrosion
resistance, although this depends heavily on
the environment and the materials used.
5.2 Lower Density
The use of lightweight reinforcements can
reduce the overall density of the composite.
15
5.3 Improved Thermal and
Electrical Conductivity
Unlikepolymer matrix composites,
MMCs retain or even enhance
thermal/electrical conductivity.
5.4 High Temperature Resistance
They maintain strength and stability
at higher temperatures than polymer
matrix composites.
16
5.5 Improved wear resistence
The reinforcement (like silicon carbide or
alumina) makes MMCs more resistant to
wear, abrasion, and erosion.
5.6 Better creep resistence
They show lower deformation over time
under stress and heat compared to pure
metals
17
6. Applications
6.1 Air planes
Used in various parts of planes
to keep them strong and light
weight
6.2 Trains
Used in brake system To Figure 1.7 Ceramic matrix composites
handle high pressure and heat
18
6.3 Power Tools
Used in drills and cutters for longer-lasting
use.
6.4 Sports
Used in bikes and rackets to make them lighter
and tougher.
6.5 Industrial
Applied in cutting tools for improved wear
resistance.
