Data Communication IT 2024

The document explains the concept of networks as interconnected systems of devices that communicate to share resources and data. It outlines four types of networks: Personal Area Networks (PAN), Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), and Wide Area Networks (WAN), each serving different scales and purposes. Together, these networks enable connectivity and facilitate communication across various distances, supporting modern technological needs.

Types of Network
What is a Network?

A network is a system of interconnected devices, such as computers, smartphones, or

servers, that communicate with each other to share resources, data, or services. These
connections can be wired or wireless and facilitate various types of communication,
including sharing files, accessing the internet, and sending emails.
It could be as small as your personal space or as large as the globe.
Types of Network
Personal Area Network
A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a
type of network used for
communication among devices in
close proximity to an individual. It
typically covers a range of a few
meters and is often used for
connecting personal devices such
as smartphones, tablets, laptops,
wearable devices, and personal
computers.
Continuation
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are common technologies used to create PANs.
Bluetooth, for example, allows devices like smartphones and
headphones to connect wirelessly over short distances, enabling
tasks like file sharing, audio streaming, and device synchronization.
Wi-Fi can also be used to create a PAN within a home or office
environment, allowing devices to connect to a local network for
internet access and file sharing.
Local Area Network
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network
that connects computers and devices within
a relatively small geographic area, such as
a single building, office, or campus. LANs
are commonly used in homes, schools, and
businesses to facilitate communication and
resource sharing among devices. They
typically use wired or wireless connections
and can support various network services,
including file sharing, printing, and
internet access.
Continuation
LANs excel in providing high-speed communication with minimal delay, making them
perfect for data-intensive activities like streaming media or accessing shared files.
They're typically linked to broader networks, such as the internet, via routers or
gateway devices, enabling users to tap into external resources and services
from within the LAN.
Metropolitan Area Network
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network
that connects multiple local area networks
(LANs) within a specific city or metropolitan
area. It offers broader coverage than a LAN but
is smaller in scale compared to a wide area
network (WAN), providing higher data transfer
rates for organizations and businesses across a
city or metropolitan region.
Wide Area Network
A wide area network (WAN) is a type of
computer network that spans a large
geographical area, such as a country,
continent, or even the entire globe. Unlike
local area networks (LANs), which typically
cover a small area like an office, WANs
connect LANs over long distances.
Continuation
WANs use various technologies, including
leased lines, satellite links, and fiber optic
cables, to transmit data between different
locations. They enable communication and data
exchange between geographically dispersed
offices, branches, or users, allowing
organizations to share resources, such as files,
applications, and databases, across vast
distances.
Conclusion
In summary, the varied network types—PAN, MAN, LAN, and WAN—serve
essential roles in enabling connectivity at different scales. PANs connect
personal devices, MANs link communities, LANs facilitate organizational
communication, and WANs span large geographical areas. Together, they form
the backbone of modern connectivity, driving innovation and global progress.
