The pledge of

Aqabah and the

Hijrah
The pledge of Aqabah
• In the year of the 12th year of the prophethood.
• In the season of pilgrimage in Makkah, people used to set up stalls and
welcome visitors from all around. There was many different people.
• Our Prophet(SAW) saw this as an opportunity to preach Islam.
• From amongst these visitors there were a group six people from
Yathrib(Medinah),and they were halting at a place called Aqabah.
• Our prophet peace and blessings be upon him told these people about the
beauty of Islam, all about Allah and that he was a prophet. He even recited a
few verses from the Quran for them.
• These people were so impressed and moved by Islam and the prophet(saw)
that they took shahadah right there and then.
• These people from Madinah, believed from the bottom of their hearts that with
the help of this religion they would be saved from the disturbances and
difficulties among their community.
• So when these people were about to return they made a promise to our
prophet that they will come back they same season next year. After these
people returned they told everyone about islam and the prophet, and many
people accepted islam.
• The following year during the pilgrimage
season the 6 people brought some of their
friends who were very excited to meet the
prophet.
• They had come with good news of the love and
loyalty of the muslims in Madinah. They wanted
to know more about Allah and his
commandments.
• The prophet told then all about the
commandments in the Quran. Now… these
people promised the prophet SAW and made a
beautiful agreement with him that they will
never worship anyone or thing other than Allah
SWT, never steal, never harm innocent people,
never commit adultery, never backbite and
they would follow the prophet in anything that
he would say or do.
• Since this agreement was made in Aqabah it is
named the 1st agreement of Aqabah.
• These people then requested from the prophet
that he sends someone with them to support and
help them so Muhammad SAW sent Mus’ab who
was suitable for this task.
• The muslims of Madinah welcomed Mu’sab with
great love and care. And he began teaching them
all about the beautiful religion of islam.
• Most of the people of Madinah were readily
accepting Islam.
• All these muslims of Madinah who kept hearing
about the prophet were so desperate to meet him.
So during the next pilgrimage season Mus’ab and
around 75 people set out for Makkah.
• Now, these people of Madinah new how difficult
the prophets life was in Makkah as the people of
Makkah were ignorant towards Islam and the
prophet, so they offered for him to come and stay
with them in Madinah.
• Then they took an oath with the prophet SAW that
they would protect him as their own. Hence the
second agreement of Aqaabah was made.
The start of the
Hijrah
• The muslims of Makkah faced severe persecution
for following the religion of Islam. They were
boycotted, abused and out casted out of Makkah
for their beliefs.
• Being unable to bear the torture muslims were in
dire need of a safe place where they could practice
their faith in security.
• After the Pledge od Aqaabah, the believers of
makkah began to make the journey. Within two
months or so almost all the muslims of Makkah had
migrated.
• But the prophet himself waited behind waiting for
the permission of Allah to leave. After the
command came from Allah the prophet rushed to
Abubakar’s house in the noon and advised him
about the journey.
That night
• That evening a group of leaders of the Quraysh got up to
devise a plan to end the spreading of Islam. As per the
suggestion of Abu-Jahal, they agreed to assassinate the
prophet.
• They sent a representative from each group, so that everyone
would take the blame. It was at this moment that the angel
Gibreel, descended and informed the prophet SAW to leave
immediately.
• He rushed to the house of Abubakar and the two of them set
out on two camels that Abubakar had previously prepared.
• The prophet instructed his cousin Ali to return all the goods he
had been entrusted with to the owners.
• When the assassins entered they were shocked to see Ali
instead of the prophet SAW.
• As the prophet left Makkah he turned around and said” I
swear by Allah, you are the best of lands of Allah and you are
the most beloved land to Allah, And had your people not
forced me out I would never have left you. And I would never
resided in any other city but you.”
The cave the prophet
hid in(mountain of
Thawr)
• They then continued to the mountain of Thawr. Where they were supposed to
stay for 3 nights.
• Upon realising the prophets escape the leaders of the Quraysh set out to find
him they put a bounty of 100 camels on the prophet and searched for him.
• Through the help of an expert desert tracker they were able to trace the prophet
SAW. All the way to the base of the mountain of Thawr.
• Abubakar could see Abu-jahl and those with him through the crevis of the cave.
Were they to look down they were able to see him too.he was over taken by
grief fearing for the prophet. The prophet SAW quickly turned to Abubakar and
reassured him for Allah SWT was with them.
• Ofcourse the help of Allah SWT soon came for he placed a spiders web and birds
nest at the entrance of the cave. Which caused the search to be unbeneficial
which then closed.
• The following Monday the prophet and Abu bakar headed to Madinah with the
help of a professional guide taking an un-orthodox route.
• After a 1 week journey, the prophet SAW arrived a city in Kuuba where he built
the 1st mosque in Islam and rested for 4 days and on the Friday of that week on
the 12th of Rabi’ul awal in the 14th year or his prophethood the prophet SAW
finally entered the city of Madinah.
• The ansar and the muhajirin flooded the streets as they rushed out to welcome
the prophet… hundreds if not thousands of men, women and children beaming
with joy and hapiness as they embraced the prophet SAW his Hijrah was finally
COMPLETE! And after years of persecution in mekkah medinah was then
declared the new home of the muslims.
