Cal Rabbit

The document outlines a laboratory experiment aimed at demonstrating the effect of a drug on a rabbit's eye using computer-assisted software. It details the materials, drugs, procedure, and parameters observed, including pupil size, light reflex, and corneal reflex. The experiment involves instilling a control and test drug in each eye and measuring the effects periodically.

COMPUTER ASSISTED

LABORATORY – RABBIT
EXPERIMENT
At the end of the session, the student should be able to:

- List out the materials and drugs required for the

procedure.

- Discuss the procedure for the experiment.

- List out the parameters observed during the experiment.

- Identify the drug exhibiting the effect.

- Justify the conclusion of the drug exhibiting the effect.

AIM: To demonstrate the effect of the drug administered in
the rabbit eye using Computer Assisted software.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Pen torch, wisp of cotton, scissors, stop

watch, transparent measuring scale.

DRUGS REQUIRED: Normal saline solution (control drug), test

drug solution.

PROCEDURE: A rabbit was procured from the animal house

approved by the Institutional Animal Ethical Committee and
CPSCEA and was allowed to get accustomed to the laboratory
- The rabbit was handled gently through out the experiment.
The eye lashes were before the experiment.
- Both the eyes of the rabbit were exposed to equal amount
of light.
- Left eye was considered as control and normal saline
solution drops were instilled.
- Right eye was considered as test and active drug solution
drops were instilled.
- Parameters – size of the pupil, light reflex and corneal
- The lower eyelid was retracted to form a pouch and 2-3
drops of either normal saline or test drug were instilled
into right eye and left eye respectively.
- Immediately gentle pressure is applied on the inner
canthus of the eye to avoid drainage through the
nasolacrimal duct.
- Size of the pupil was measured, presence or absence of the
light reflex and corneal reflex were elicited periodically for
every 5 mins for another 25mins.
- The results were tabulated and inference was drawn.
SIZE OF THE PUPIL: Measure by using measuring scale. Note

in mm/cm.

LIGHT REFLEX: Move the torch from lateral to medial side of

each eye and check the response of the pupil.

If there is constriction of pupil  Light reflex +ve.

CORNEAL REFLEX: Touch the medial side of cornea with a

wisp of cotton. Closure of eyelids  Corneal reflex +ve.
