5.

3 Metals and Non metals

Lesson objectives

 Understand the properties of metals and non-metals.

 Differentiate between metals and non-metals based on their physical
and chemical properties.
Success criteria

 I can correctly classify given substances as metals or non-metals

based on their properties.
 I can explain the reasons behind the classification of a substance as
a metal or non-metal.
 I can relate the reactivity of metals and non-metals to their positions
in the periodic table.
Key words

 Luster
 Malleability
 conductivity
starter

 What do you think of when you hear the word ‘metal’? And what
about ‘non-metal’?
 The concepts of metals and non-metals.
For example:Metals: Generally shiny, good conductors of heat and
electricity, malleable, and ductile.
Non-metals: Generally not shiny, poor conductors of heat and electricity,
brittle in solid form, and tend to form acidic oxides.
Notes explained

 Define Metals and Non-metals

 Metals: Elements that are typically shiny, malleable, ductile, and good
conductors of heat and electricity.
 Examples: Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Aluminum (Al), Gold (Au)
 Non-metals: Elements that are usually dull, brittle, and poor conductors of
heat and electricity. Many non-metals form acidic oxides.
 Examples: Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), Sulfur (S)
 Demonstrate Physical PropertiesMalleability & Ductility: Show a small piece of
aluminum foil and bend it to demonstrate malleability.Conductivity: Hold a
metal (e.g., copper wire) and a non-metal (e.g., plastic) to show conductivity.
Use a simple electric circuit or a small magnet to demonstrate magnetic
attraction (metals like iron are magnetic, non-metals are not).Brittleness: Drop
a piece of sulfur or coal to demonstrate brittleness compared to a metal.
Group activity

 Each group is given a set of samples (metal and non-metal).

 Ask them to classify each sample based on the properties they
observe and record them on a chart.
 They should focus on appearance, texture, magnetism, conductivity,
etc.
 Encourage groups to identify whether the object is a metal or non-
metal based on the properties demonstrated earlier.
feedback

 Physical Properties of Metals:

-Shiny (luster)Malleable (can be hammered into sheets)
-Ductile (can be drawn into wires)High melting/boiling points
-Good conductors of heat and electricity
 Physical Properties of Non-metals:
-Dull (lack luster)Brittle (if solid)Low melting/boiling points
-Poor conductors of heat and electricity
Chemical Properties:
-Metals typically form basic oxides and can lose electrons (oxidation).
-Non-metals typically form acidic oxides and tend to gain electrons
(reduction).
Individual work
 List at least 3 metals and 3 non-metals.
 Provide one physical and one chemical property for each category.
My UAE Identity/homework

 Discuss the importance of metals in the UAE's history and culture,

such as the traditional craft of metalwork.
plenary

 Students to give any 2 differences between metals and non-metals.
