CE 480 Tutorial LLE

The document outlines a tutorial on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) processes, focusing on ternary diagrams for separation processes. It presents two questions involving the calculation of feed composition, raffinate composition, and flow rates in a cross-current extraction system. The tutorial emphasizes the importance of understanding solute, carrier, and solvent interactions in separation processes.

Question 1
Use the ternary diagrams below to answer the questions that follow. A, C, S are the solute,
carrier and solvent respectively.

1. Given M is the mix point, what is the composition of the feed that it is brought in
contact with a solvent solution containing 15wt% of the carrier?
2. Assuming it is a single stage separation, what is the composition of the
raffinate?
Question 2

Consider a cross-current system of which you have been

given a ternary diagram. The feed flowrate is 132 kg/hr
with a solute concentration of 0.28.
A. Calculate the flow and composition of the extract
and raffinate streams at each stage given that a pure
solvent flow of 60 kg/hr is used at each extraction
unit.
B. Calculate the overall recovery
