forms
COMPOUND SUBJECTS

• Subjects joined by "and" usually take a plural verb.

• Exceptions: When the compound subject is a single

entity.

• Example: Mac and cheese is my favorite.

COLLECTIVE NOUNS

• Collective nouns (team, family, committee) can be singular or

plural.
• Singular when acting as a unit.

• Plural when individuals are emphasized.

• Example: The team are arguing about strategy. (British

English)

• Some can be singular or plural (some, all, none)
depending on the context.

gone.
"THERE IS" VS. "THERE ARE"

• Use "there is" with singular nouns.

• Use "there are" with plural nouns.

• Example: There are cats on the roof.

7
TRICKY SITUATIONS: INTERVENING PHRASES
