There were two major types of Qigong training.
1. One type was used by the Confucian and Taoist scholars, who used it
primarily to maintain their health.
2. The other type of Qigong was for medical purposes, using needles or
exercises to adjust the Chi or to cure illness.
There was almost no religious color to the training.
All of the training focused on following the natural way and improving
and maintaining health.
Actively countering the effects of nature was considered impossible.
Book of Changes : The ancient Chinese
divination manual and book of wisdom
More than 5,000 years old, the book of Changes is a book of oracles that
contains the whole of human experience. By asking it simple or complex
questions, this means of divination helps us to explore the unconscious
through the symbolism of hexagrams.
These hexagrams guide us towards the solution of difficult problems and
life situations - whatever questions we may ask. However, the book of
changes may also be read as a book of wisdom revealing the laws of life
and how we must listen to them if we are to live in peace and harmony
with the world about us.
易无思也,无為也,寂然不動,感而遂通天下之故。
The changes have no
consciousness, no action, they are
quiescent and do not move. But if
they are stimulated, they penetrate
all situations under heaven.
Divination and meditation
Book of Changes
Book of Changes is one of the most precious contributions of Chinese
culture, which has exerted a great influence on Chinese philosophy,
literature, historical study, as well as natural and social sciences.
“Book of Changes covers such a wide range of knowledge that such
fields as astronomy, geography, music, art of war, and prosodic can all
find a place in it.”
Sun Simiao, one of the most famous doctors in Chinese history, once
stated: “Medicine cannot be mastered before you have studied Book of
Changes.”
Book of Changes contains a rich stock of dialectic thought. Therefore,
TCM is said to have the same origin as Book of Changes.
Book of Changes, with its profound theories and wide range of
knowledge, is the source of nature sciences(including TCM), the root of
correct world outlook and the origin of many branches of learning.
The particular relationship between
Book of Changes and TCM
TCM cannot be approached without studying Book of Changes, Book of
Changes implies the basic theory of TCM, and TCM is practiced by applying the
theories of Book of Changes.
The theories such as the Five Elements, Zang Xiang, Qi Hua, Yun Qi and the
causes of diseases held by TCM can all find their origins in Book of Changes.
1. Yin Qi and Yang Qi ___ and _ _
2. Sancai: Tian Qi, Di Qi and Ren Qi (人法地,地法天,天法道,道法自然)
3. The six positions and the six meridians
4. The eight trigram and the meridians
5. The theory of circles
6. the moderation in Book of Changes and the theory of balance and coordination
( 中醫的“中”)
The relationship between the Luo Shu
and Hetu
Hetu - Early Eight Trigrams (pre-heaven) – generating
Luoshu – Later Eight Trigrams (post-heaven) – overcoming
We take the birthday of person as the borderline: before birth, a
person’s life is governed by the early eight trigrams; after birth, a
person’s life should be subject to the later eight trigrams.
The early eight trigrams endow mankind with all kinds of functions and
indices, such as work capacity, intelligence, life span, and so on. But
after birth, owing to the restrictions of objective conditions, it is hardly
possible to reach the limit, and many factors such as natural disasters,
nourishment, emotions, and so on, will affect human’s life, especially
the life span.

At the age of 64, a man's hair and teeth are gone.
Laozi (Dao De Jin)
The Book of Change says, “Dao(Tao) is the aid heaven gives to the origin
of things; De is the aid earth gives to the growth process." Dao and De,
then, is simply the Tao of heaven and the Tao of earth. Jin means
"constant, everyday" . Thus that which is "classic" is the constancy of
Tao.

Dao De Jing:
Tao gives birth to unity, unity gives birth to duality, duality gives birth to
trinity, and trinity gives birth to all things.
All things are wrapped by Yin and contain Yang, and their pulsing Qi in

Dao De Jing:
The spirit of corns does not die, and is called Mysterious Female.
The door of the Mysterious Female is called the root of heaven and
earth.
It lingers in wisps.
Use it without haste.
” 天食人以五氣,地食人以五味。五氣入鼻,藏於心肺,上使五色修明,音聲能彰。五味入

Huang Di Nei Jin:
Heaven nourishes human beings with five atmospheric forces; Earth
nourishes human beings by five flavors.
The five kinds of heaven Qi travel into the body through the nose to be
stored in the heart and lung so that the heart makes five colors vividly
manifest in the face, and the lung makes the voice loud and clear.
The five flavors enter through the mouth to be stored in the intestines
and stomach for the rejuvenesence of viscera. When the Qi of five
viscera are rejuvenated, yin and yang Qi will be in harmony and fluids
will be produced, so that the spirit will be generated automatically.
