Gearing

for
Background Research
Gears are the toothed wheels used in many
machines, including bicycles, where they
work together to change the relationship
between the driving mechanism and the
moving parts. Gears are used to transmit
power and motion around mechanical
systems. The input gear is called the driver
gear, The output gear is called the driven
gear.
Let’s learn some math before we get started.
The radius of a circle is the distance from its center to its
edge. Diameter is twice the radius—it’s the straight line
distance across the center of a circle. Circumference is
the distance around a circle. Thousands of years ago,
Greek mathematicians discovered the ratio of a circle’s
circumference (C) to its diameter and called it π (pi),
which is approximately equal to 3.14159, use equation:
πd=C, This equation will come in handy when cutting out
your cardboard gear teeth.
The gear ratio is
the ratio of the
circumference
of the output
gear to the
circumference
of the input
gear
Research's Question
How do gears work?
Can we use it to make a mechanical robobeast.
HYPOSYTHESIS
Investigating can gears transmit torques (twisting
forces/angular velocity) in predictable ways using
elastic bands.
And dose the circumference affect its movement
and speed that require exact movements.
Materials list
1. cardboard
2. Ruler
3. Compass
4. Sharp scissors, box cutter, or razor
5. Glue
6. Permanent Marker
7. Wooden sticks
8. Rubber bands
Procedures
 Use the ruler and compass to measure the radius of each
gear on the cardboard as follows: three gears 5 cm, two gears
2 cm and two gear 4 cm.
 Use sharp scissors, and box cutter to cut the cardboard, and 4
sticks 10 cm.
 use glue to make the gears and stick them with the sticks.
 Make the body of the robot using the cardboard with the
wooden sticks to support it.
 Use the elastic bands to connect the gears to create
movement along the robobeast as shown.
Procedures
 Use one stick and attach it to the 4cm gear and put it through
the robobeast head as shown.
 To create the head movement do a cut and open mouth with
teeth and mark it with the permanent marker.
 Draw its beasty eyes and glue it.

Risk and safety

 Risk: working with razer and sharp scissors.
 Safety: handle them carefully under the
supervision of an adult.
Conclusion
From our robobeast model we can see that:
Gear are used to assist in movement in a mechanical
accurate way, in different directions by adjusting the
sizes and connecting them and to control the output
speed making it faster or slower than the input speed.
Further recommendations
 Use different types of gears with DC motor
to control the speed of movement .
