Unit 2: Empires and Nation Building
Certain notable empires start to form, like the Mughal, Ottoman, and Safavid.
Countries and people were separated by economic policy and religion. Countries
were either Catholic, Protestant, or Islamic, because there were now other
religions spreading, not just Catholic, the Catholic Churches started to lose power.
Many countries were starting mercantilism, which is another way Islam was
spreading.
Henry IV and The War of the Three Henrys
Henry IV was the first king of France from the House of Bourbon. He exemplifies
this era because he started one of the biggest royal dynasties in European history.
He was a protestant who aimed for religious acceptance, people didn’t really like
this and it started The War of the Three Henrys. This war was a fight between
protestants and catholics and even though he won he still was assassinated by a
catholic later.

Unit 3: The Enlightenment and Revolution
Absolute monarchies were seen in many countries, but as time went on people
started to revolt and those monarchies would crumble. Two examples this is seen
in are the French Revolution and the American revolution. There was a big spread
of Democracy and self Governing countries.
Marie Antoinette and The French Revolution
Marie Antoinette was the wife of King Louis XVI and the queen of France in the
late 1700s. She exemplifies this era because people like her were the reason that
France revolted. She was out of touch with her people and just kept spending
money while the people she ruled over were starving. This is best shown by the
infamous “Let them eat cake!” quote that was attributed to her.
The French Revolution was the 3rd estate being done with their lack of votes
counted and opinions heard, this lead to a very violent revolution. This event
helped spread enlightenment ideals and democracy.

Unit 4: Industrialization and Imperialism
During this time period there were a lot of new and helpful inventions that made
many things more efficient. This time was all about getting more and more money
and as a result of that there was a lot more child labor. Industrializing countries
would “steal” resources from unindustrialized countries through a process known
as imperialism.
Samuel Morse and Industrialism
Samuel Morse made morse code and the telegraph, which was used to
communicate from far distances. This exemplifies the era because industrialism
was about making life easier and communication is a big part in everyday life for
most people.
The Industrial Revolution had a big impact on human life, and it formed how many
people live their lives today. Many people around the world work in factories or
mass production, which wouldn’t exist today without this event.

Unit 5: World War I and Its Aftermath
Many countries had alliances with each other that other countries didn’t know
about and that created the real domino effect. So when Austria’s leader got
murdered it started a whole world war. Machine guns, grenades, trench warfare,
and planes were all new inventions in this time and everybody wanted to try these
out on everybody else. At the end of the war a treaty was made. The Treaty of
Versailles targeted Germany and Germany wasn’t very happy about that so they
broke the treaty and set the stage for World War ll.
Rasputin and the Russian Revolution
Rasputin was a “magical” healer who worked with the disabled son of the Russian
royalty. While the Czar was fighting WWI he was gaining political power by DOIN
IT with the Czarina. This would lead to him being assassinated by the other
Russian nobles (after way to many tries). He exemplifies this era because he
shows how unstable Russia was at this time which would lead to the Revolution.
The Russian Revolution was lead by the people because they didn’t like how the
Monarchy was running things. The revolution was won by the Bolsheviks who
were Communist and led to the formation of the socialist USSR. Russia then
became part of the USSR which is important because they participated in the
Space Race and all of the hotspots during the Cold War.

Unit 6: World War II
Germany is unhappy about the Treaty of Versailles so they end up putting Hitler in
charge. Hitler starts the Holocaust, the mass murdering of Jews and other
undesirable people. The world experiences Nuclear warfare for the first and
hopefully last time, when Japan gets one dropped on them by the US. After the
war Germany is split up between the USSR and the US and its allies, this shows
the tensions leading to the Cold War.
Hitler and The Holocaust
Hitler exemplifies WWII because he started it. He was the main antagonist during
WWII, his actions started the Holocaust which is the biggest mass murdering and
a huge part of WWII. He was the reason that the Treaty of Versailles was
abandoned and he eventually killed himself when it was apparent that Germany
was going to lose the war.
The Holocaust was a big event in history, not only because it was a big part of
WWII, but it also showed what humanity does when you put a really bad person in
charge, it gave a lesson on what never to do again.

Unit 7: The Cold War and the Continuation of Independence Movements
The Soviet Union and the US fight over communism because the US is worried
about “the domino effect”. It was called the Cold War because the fights weren’t
direct wars, but rather proxy wars. The Domino Theory was the US believing that if
one country converted to communism after decolonization then the rest would
follow along, so they decided on “containment” to try and stop communism from
spreading.
Fidel Castro and The Cuban Missile Crisis
Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba and a big supporter of communism. This
support caused friction between Cuba and the US and there is no trade between
the two countries even after all these years. Fidel was a revolutionary who
became a lifelong dictator, he ended up being a crucial part of the Cold War. The
tensions were highest between the two during the Missile Crisis.
The Missile Crisis was when the USSR decided that the missiles that the US had
places in Turkey and Italy were too close to them and asked the US to take them
away. When the US refused Cuba volunteered to host the USSR’s missiles as
they pointed toward the US. After a long while of everyone worrying about these
missiles being launched off, in the end no missiles got launched.

Unit 8: Modern History 1945 - Present Day
The Space Race was a quarrel between the Soviet Union and the US on who could get
someone on the moon first. This was to show who had better technological advancements
and because whoever won, other countries would side with them on communism or
capitalism. After WWI made the League of Nations and it failed to do anything to stop WWII,
those countries knew that it wasn’t working so they made the United Nations.
The “Thaw” was when President Nixon and Mao made an agreement to stop being enemies.
This lead to trading between them and now China is an important importer. The Cuban Missile
Crisis was when the US had missiles pointed too close for the USSR’s comfort and so
because Cuba had just had an argument with the US they agreed to have the missiles put in
their country by the USSR and pointed at the US. The Cold War ended when the Soviet Union
crumbled. After all of this was settled Germany was put back together and left alone.
Lyndon B. Johnson and the Vietnam War
Lyndon B. Johnson exemplifies this era because he was the leader of US and was
sending and drafting troops to fight on Southern Vietnam’s side. He famously
signed the civil rights act and was a advocate of containment and domino theory.
He became president after the assassination of John F. Kennedy and went on to
serve in office during a very chaotic time in US History.
The Vietnam War is a greatly disliked war because it is thought unnecessary that
the US had to participate in it. It was a war in which many young Americans were
drafted in and forced to fight in. It was the biggest hotspot in the Cold War and is
one of the only wars that the US has lost.
