Lecture # 1

The document is an introduction to Linear Algebra, covering its fundamental concepts such as linear equations, solution sets, and the classification of systems as consistent or inconsistent. It outlines the importance of understanding whether a linear system has solutions and if those solutions are unique. Additionally, it includes practice questions to reinforce the material discussed.

LINEAR ALGEBRA

(MA-201)
Lecture # 1
2

Linear Algebra
A branch of mathematics that is concerned with mathematical
structures closed under the operations of addition and scalar
multiplication and that includes the theory of systems of linear
equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, and linear
transformations.

A Solution of the system is a list of numbers that makes each

equation a true statement when the values s 1, s2, s3, s4, …, sn is
substituted for x1, x2, x3, x4, …, xn respectively.
The set of all possible solutions is called the Solution set of the
linear system. Two linear systems are called Equivalent if they have
the same solution set. That is, each solution of the first system is a
solution of the second system, and each solution of the second
system is a solution of the first.

A system of linear equations is said to be Consistent if it has

either one solution or infinitely many solutions.
A system is Inconsistent if it has no solution.

Two Fundamental Questions About a Linear System:
1. Is the system consistent; that is, does at least one solution exist?
2. If a solution exists, is it the only one; that is, is the solution
unique?

Question # 2:
Determine if the following system is consistent.

Question # 3:
Determine if the following system is consistent.
