Definition and social function
• Analytical exposition is a text that
elaborates the writer‘s idea about
the phenomenon surrounding.
• The social function is to convince
the reader that the topics
presented was an important topic
to be discussed or gained
attention by way of providing
arguments or opinions that support
the main idea or topic
Generic structure
Analytical exposition text is constructed from three
stages:
a. Thesis
• Introducing the topic and indicating the writer’s point
of view.
b. Arguments
• Explaining the argument to support the writer’s
position. The number of arguments may vary, but
each argument must be supported by evidence and
explanation.
c. Reiteration
• Restating the writer’s point of view / to strengthen the
thesis. We can use the following phrase to make
conclusion in reiteration: From the fact above …, I
Paragraph 1 is the thesis of this analytical
exposition text. It states the fact of benefit
of learning English. Clearly the writer
wantsto say that English is useful.
In this example of analytical exposition text,
paragraph 2 and 3 are the detail arguments
presented in a reporting fact to support that
learning English is useful or has benefits.
Furthermore, people who learn English will
be easier in developing themselves in this
global era
The last paragraph of analytical
exposition points again learning English
has many benefits. However, English is
useful.
Language Features
The language features
Analytical Exposition text often uses:
✓ Using Simple Present Tense
✓ The use of connective words including;
A. Adding information, such as; moreover, in
addition, and also.
B. Contrasting information, for example; but,
however, and even
though.
C. Causality, for example; because, therefore, thus,
consequently, despite, due to, for that reason, dll.
D. Time (waktu), for example: second, then, next.
