Simulation Process

• a method of modeling
real-world systems or
processes to understand
their behavior, test
different scenarios, and
potentially improve
them.
The Process Simulation

• Problem Definition
- The initial step involves defining the goals of the study and
knows what needs to be solved.
• Project Planning
- The tasks for completing the project are broken down into
work packages with a responsible party assigned to each
package.
• System Definition
- This step involves identifying the system components to be
modeled and the performance measures to be analyzed.
The Process Simulation
• Model Formulation
- Understanding how the actual system behaves and
determining the basic requirements of the model are
necessary in developing the right model.
• Input Data Collection & Analysis
- After formulating the model, the type of data to collect is
determined. New data is collected and/or existing data is
gathered. Data is fitted to theoretical distributions.
• Model Translation
- The model is translated into programming language.
Choices range from general purpose languages such as Java
or simulation programs such as Arena.
The Process Simulation
• Verification & Validation
- Verification is the process of ensuring that the model
behaves as intended, usually by debugging or through
animation.
• Experimentation & Analysis
- Experimentation involves developing the alternative
model(s), executing the simulation runs, and statistically
comparing the alternative(s) system performance with that of
the real system.
• Documentation & Implementation
- Documentation consists of the written report and/or
presentation. The results and implications of the study are
discussed. The best course of action is identified,
recommended, and justified.
Challenges in the Simulation
Process
• Data Quality: Ensuring the accuracy,
completeness, and reliability of input data is
crucial for simulation accuracy. Poor data can
lead to inaccurate results and unreliable
conclusions.
• Model Validation and Verification: Verifying
the model accurately reflects the real-world
system being simulated and validating that it
provides useful insights is a significant hurdle.
• Computational Resources and Time: Large-
scale simulations, especially those involving
complex systems or long time horizons, can be
computationally expensive and time-
consuming.
• Cost: Developing and maintaining high-quality
Simulation Lifecycle

• a structured process used in

developing and using
simulation models. This
lifecycle helps ensure that
simulation models are
accurate, reliable, and
effectively used to address
specific problems or research
questions. .
Simulation Lifecycle
• Problem Definition
• Clearly identify the problem or system to be
studied and define the goals of the simulation.
• Model Development and Implementation
During this phase, a conceptual model is
translated into a detailed simulation model. This
involves choosing the appropriate tools,
methods, and techniques to represent the
system.
• Verification and Validation
Verification ensures the model has been built
correctly and works as intended, while validation
confirms that the model reflects the real-world
system accurately.
Simulation Lifecycle
• Execution and Experimentation
This phase involves running the
simulation under various scenarios and
collecting data from the system. The goal
is to observe how different inputs affect
the system's behavior.
• Analysis and Optimization
The final phase focuses on analyzing the
results and making adjustments to
improve the model or system. Based on
the insights gained, the model may be
refined and optimized to provide more
accurate or efficient results.
