Reading strategies- Chunking
 PUNCTUALLY at midday he opened his bag and spread out his
professional equipment, which consisted of a dozen cowrie shells, a
square piece of cloth with obscure mystic charts on it, a notebook, and a
bundle of palmyra writing. His forehead was resplendent with sacred ash
and vermilion, and his eyes sparkled with a sharp abnormal gleam which
was really an outcome of a continual searching look for customers, but
which his simple clients took to be a prophetic light and felt comforted.
The power of his eyes was considerably enhanced by their position placed
as they were between the painted forehead and the dark whiskers which
streamed down his cheeks : even a half-wit's eyes would sparkle in such a
setting. To crown the effect he wound a saffron-coloured turban around
his head. This colour scheme never failed. People were attracted to him
as bees are attracted to cosmos or dahlia stalks. He sat under the boughs
of a spreading tamarind tree which flanked a path running through the
Town Hall Park. It was a remarkable place in many ways : a surging
crowd was always moving up and down this narrow road morning till
night* A variety of trades and occupations was represented all along its
way : medicine sellers, sellers

Making predictions encourages readers to use critical
thinking
and problem-solving skills. Learners will be interested
in the reading material when they connect their prior
knowledge with the new information that is being
learned.

How to predict
1.Review the front and back of a book ,the table of
contents, the
Chapter names, subheadings and diagrams prior to
reading.
2.Make connections to the text using your prior
knowledge.
3.Create

WHAT IS SCANNING:

Scanning is a reading technique used to find

specific information quickly. In scanning you
have a question in your mind, and you read the
passage/text only to find the answer , ignoring
unrelated information.

07/14/2025 Dr.K.Padmaja 16
SCANNING:
HOW TO SCAN:
 state the specific information you are looking for.
 anticipate how the answer will appear
 clues you might use to locate the answer.
 Example: if you were looking for a certain date, you
would quickly read the paragraph looking only for
numbers.
 Selectively read and skip through sections of the
passage.

Reading strategies- inferring
The young woman walked a bit hesitantly
towards the famous cozy Italian restaurant.
She did not believe the excuse her parents
gave her for having to meet her at the
restaurant instead of at their house. To make
matters worse, she was a bit grumpy because
she was still catching up on the sleep that she
lost during exam time. She noticed some cars
that looked familiar in the parking lot. As
soon as she walked through the door, she
heard, "Surprise!"

Reading strategies- inferring
the text says: She did not believe the excuse
her parents gave her.
I know: Sometimes if people play practical
jokes, others don't believe everything they say.
Maybe her parents played practical jokes.
The text says: She was a bit grumpy because
she was still catching up on the sleep that she
lost during exam time.
I know: I know exams are usually given in
school, so she is probably in high school or
college.

Reading strategies- inferring
The text says: She noticed some cars that
looked familiar in the parking lot. As soon as
she walked through the door, she heard,
"Surprise!“
I know: If the cars are familiar, that means
people she knows are in the restaurant. This
makes me change my inference.
 If her parents wanted to meet her at the
restaurant, and other people she knows are
there, maybe it's a surprise party.

Reading strategies- inferring vocabulary
“In forest monasteries, monks usually live in
their own private kuti.”
We know the word must be a noun;
the rest of the sentence informs us that it is a
place where the monks live;
perhaps our knowledge of Thai monasteries
even enables us to picture the kuti

Reading strategies- inferring vocabulary
"Lou was sent to the haberdashery to find
a new suit. He needed to wear one for his
uncle’s wedding."
Because the sentence says that Lou would
find a suit at the haberdashery, then it must
be a place where clothes for men are sold.
