INTRODUCTION:
A SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY(SMPS) or
switcher is an electronic power supply that
incorporates a switching regulator to convert
electrical power efficiently. It transfer power
from a source, to a load, while converting
voltage and current characteristics. An SMPS
is usually employed to efficiently provide a
regulated output voltage, typically at a level
different from the input voltage.
POWER SUPPLY :
The different types of power
supplies include:
DC power supply
AC power supply
Linear regulated power supply
Switched mode power supply
Programmable power supply
Uninterruptible power supply
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF SMPS
• Input rectifier stage : It is used to convert an
AC input to DC.
• Inverter stage : The inverter stage convert DC,
directly from the input rectifier.
• Output transformer :
• Output rectifier : Converts AC output into DC.
TYPES OF SMPS
SMPS can be classified into two types based on
circuit topology :
DC to DC converter
AC to DC converter
Fly back converter
Forward converter

NEED FOR SMPS :
• SMPS replaces the traditional linear ac-to-dc power
supplies as a way to cut power consumption, reduces
heat dissipation, as well as size and weight.
• A SMPS is a type of power supply that uses semiconductor
switching techniques, rather than standard linear methods to
provide the required output voltage.
• SMPS is higher efficiency, compared to standard linear
regulators, and this is achieved by internally switching a
transistor between its “ ON” state and its “OFF” state, both
of which produces lower power dissipation.
APPLICATION
• Machine tool industries
• Security System (Closed circuit cameras)
• Support supplies with PLC’s
• Personal Computers (PC)
• Mobile Phone chargers
CONCLUSION:
A switching mode power supply is a power supply
that provides the power supply function
through low loss components such as
capacitors, Inductors and Transformers and the
use of switches that are in one of the two
states, on or off. The advantage is that the
switch dissipates very little power in either of
this two states and power conversion can be
accomplsed with a minimal power loss, which
equates to high efficiency. SMPS, designs relay
upon the efficiency of a switch to control
amount of power with relatively losses.
