Joule - Group 1 2

The document presents a topical research presentation by a group focused on three main topics: the use of Tawa-tawa for treating boils, the effectiveness of pineapple as an antifungal agent, and the development of a renewable and biodegradable insulator from coconut husks. Each topic outlines the associated problems, attainability, sustainability, challenges, and estimated costs for resources and lab testing. The research aims to address health and environmental issues prevalent in the Philippines.

RESEARCH TOPIC 1
Tawa tawa for boils
PROBLEM
Philippines is a common type of inffection caused by
Staphylococcus aureus. These bacteria is most
commonly carried in the nostrils, armpits, between the
legs and in the cleft between the buttocks. It may be
transferred to other sites from the nostrils via the finger
nails (DermNet, 2017). These infections are common in
tropical countries like the Philippines where these
conditions are and lack of hygiene contribute in
ATTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABILITY
Tawa-tawa is easily and readily attainable here
in the Philippines, as it grows in various open
waste places. It grows in warm climates and
doesn't require extensive resources. It is also
known for its anti-inflammatory and
antibacterial properties that may reduce
swelling and pain.
CHALLENGES
The possible challenges that might be
encountered are limited study or insufficient
amounts of data that may be recovered directly
linking to the treatment of boils and limited
possible lab testing facilities that accept specific
agents. A different variety of methods can also
be encountered.

RESEARCH TOPIC 2
Effectiveness of Pineapple as a Antifungal
Agent
v

PROBLEM
According to Fang Et al., around 1.9 million
patients get an acute invasive fungal infection
(IFI) each year, while an estimated 3 million
people globally suffer from chronic severe
fungal infections. Many of these are life-
threatening infections, with an estimated
greater than 1.6 million deaths per year
ATTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABILITY
Pineapple have natural antifungal properties. Its

effectiveness and availability make it valuable

subject for future researchers to improve their

ideas.
CHALLENGES
Possible challenges to face are limited access to lab
testing, limited studies to support pineapple as a
antifungal agent, and lastly research budget.

RESEARCH TOPIC 3
renewable and
biodegradable Insulator
made from coconut
husk
PROBLEM
Intense heatwaves in the Philippines during March
and April severely impacted daily life and key
industries such as agriculture and fisheries. The
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration repeatedly
warned of dangerously high heat indexes (42-
51°C), increasing the risk of heat-related
illnesses. The extreme heat affected up to 26
ATTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABILITY
Waste Reduction Some coconut husks often get
burned realeasing much carbon dioxide. The
coconut husk insulator gives valuable use for waste
material. Renewable Coconut husks are easily
renewable resource, unlike PE foam insulators
( made from polyethylene foam ) commonly used as
an insulator. This reduce the reliance on finite
CHALLENGES
Coconut husks has a dense fiber length that depends on the coconuts age

and growth conditions. This inconsistence makes it difficult to achieve the

level of insulation across the room's walls. In our hypothetical project, some

sections of the room might have a poor insulations, leaving with uneven

temperature distribution and efficiency. Coconut husk absorbs moistures,

reducing the insulating capacity and potentially leading to mold and fungus

growth. In humid climates, this gives significant concern. Furthermore,

untreated husks are susceptible to infested by insects. Our hypothetical
