WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

THROUGH COEXISTENCE

Subtitle: A Sustainable Approach to Preserve

Biodiversity

What is Wildlife Week?
• Wildlife Week is an annual event in India that is
celebrated from October 2nd to October 8th to raise
awareness about the importance of wildlife
conservation.
• It was first initiated in 1952 by the Indian Board of
Wildlife to generate support for the protection and
preservation of wildlife in India.
• OLD NAME- Central Wildlife Board
• HEADQUARTERS- New Delhi
• Wildlife Institute of India (WII) 1982-
Dehradun,Uttarakhand
What Is Wildlife?
Wildlife refers to all living organisms—animals,
birds, insects, plants, and other organisms—that
exist naturally in the wild, typically in environments
such as forests, deserts, grasslands, and oceans.
Wildlife includes undomesticated species that thrive
in their natural habitats without direct human
intervention.
What is Wildlife Conservation?
• Efforts to protect species, their habitats, and
ecosystems.
“Wildlife conservation is the practice of protecting
wild species (plant and animal) and their habitats in
order to ensure that the wildlife is preserved and
prevented from becoming extinct.”
Wildlife Conservation Methods
• Habitat Protection: Establishing and maintaining protected areas
like national parks, reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries to safeguard
ecosystems.
• Anti-Poaching Measures: Implementing laws and enforcement to
prevent illegal hunting, trade, and poaching of wildlife, often
using technology like drones, camera traps, and GPS tracking.
• Breeding Programs: Captive breeding and reintroduction
programs help recover endangered species by breeding animals in
captivity and releasing them back into the wild.
• Restoration of Ecosystems: Rehabilitating degraded habitats,
replanting native vegetation, and restoring wetlands, forests, and
grasslands to support biodiversity.
• Wildlife Corridors: Creating migration pathways or corridors that
connect fragmented habitats, allowing species to move safely
between them and maintain genetic diversity.
• Legislation and Policy: Enforcing wildlife protection laws,
regulating hunting, fishing, and land use to ensure species
conservation.
• Community-Based Conservation: Involving local communities
in conservation efforts by promoting sustainable livelihoods,
education, and eco-tourism to reduce dependence on wildlife
resources.
• Scientific Research: Conducting studies to monitor
populations, assess ecosystem health, and gather data that
informs effective conservation strategies.
• Public Awareness and Education: Raising awareness through
campaigns and education about the importance of wildlife
conservation and how individuals can contribute.
• Combating Invasive Species: Controlling or eradicating
invasive species that threaten native wildlife and disrupt
ecosystems.
Why Coexistence is Important?
• Living harmoniously with wildlife helps reduce conflict,
protect endangered species, and promote biodiversity.
• Coexistence is essential for wildlife conservation
because it allows humans and wildlife to thrive
together without negatively impacting each other’s
survival. As human populations expand and encroach
upon natural habitats, conflicts between humans and
wildlife have become more frequent.
The Concept of Coexistence
“Coexistence is about creating balanced
environments where human and wildlife
populations can thrive together.”

Key Principles:
• Mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts: refers to
strategies, practices, and actions aimed at reducing
the negative interactions and conflicts that occur
between humans and wildlife.
• Conservation corridors: designated areas of natural
habitat that connect fragmented ecosystems or
protected areas, allowing wildlife to move freely
between them.
• Community Involvement: refers to the active
participation and engagement of local communities in
the planning, implementation, and management of
conservation efforts.
Coexistence in Action-
• Example 1: Snow Leopards and Farmers in the
Himalayas
– Community-based tourism and compensation
programs reduce conflicts between farmers and snow
leopards.
• Example 2: Elephants in Africa
– Use of innovative methods like bee fences to prevent
crop damage while protecting elephants.
Strategies for Promoting Coexistence
• Habitat Preservation:
Protecting natural habitats to prevent human
encroachment.
• Community Engagement:
Education and involvement of local communities in
conservation efforts.
• Technology and Innovation:
Use of tools like GPS tracking, early warning systems,
and wildlife corridors.
Benefits of Coexistence
• Biodiversity Protection:
A balanced ecosystem that supports multiple species.
• Economic Gains for Communities:
Ecotourism, sustainable agriculture, and compensation
programs.
• Reduction of Human-Wildlife Conflicts:
Strategies like building wildlife-friendly infrastructure
and barriers.
Challenges to Coexistence
• Human Population Growth:
Increasing demand for land and resources puts pressure
on wildlife.
• Climate Change:
Shifts in habitats force animals closer to human
settlements.
• Limited Resources for Conservation:
Lack of funding for long-term conservation programs.
Relationship between Wildlife and
Coexistence

The relationship between wildlife and coexistence is

centered around the balance between human activities
and the preservation of ecosystems that support diverse
species.
Achieving coexistence with wildlife involves creating
environments where both humans and wildlife can
thrive without conflict or the degradation of natural
habitats
How You Can Help?
• Support Conservation Organizations:
Donations, volunteering, and advocacy.
• Promote Wildlife-Friendly Practices:
Reducing habitat destruction, using eco-friendly
products, and spreading awareness.
• Engage in Ecotourism:
Traveling to wildlife reserves and supporting local
economies while promoting conservation.
“We can share the planet
and live in harmony with
the wild, creating a future
where biodiversity
flourishes.”
