What is liturgy?
• By liturgy, do we mean the Church Rituals.

• What are the Church Rituals?

• Church practice or service done according to religious

beliefs and traditions. To understand the meaning of
liturgy, it is important to know where this word
originates and what is signifies.
The Term liturgy comes from the combination of
two Greek words:
Ergos, which means work;
Leiton, an adjective of leo-laos, which means
people.
Leitourgia means “public works”, in the sense of
serving and worshipping God as a people or a
community.
• Liturgy is more that just the ritual, ceremonies or
communal services we perform as an expression of
our devotion to and worship of God.

• It is a wellspring of our relationship with God as His

people or family gathered together to glorify Him and
to receive blessing from Him.

• Liturgy is central to Christianity, for in it and through

it, the mystery of our salvation is remembered and
celebrated.
The Church’s Constitution on
Sacred Liturgy.
The Sacrosanctum Concilium, latin ,means “The Sacred
Council”
Defines the liturgy as “an exercise of the priestly office
of Jesus Christ.
Every liturgical Celebration is an action of Christ, the
Priest and of His Body, which is the Church. It means
Church is the expression of Ministry of Jesus.
This sacred action has a double
movement:
Ascending movement:

By which we present to God our offering of adoration, praise and

thanksgiving as well our response of faith and love to His blessing.

Descending movement:

By which God blesses the gifts we offer and the Holy Spirit sanctifies us
particularly through perceptible and effective sign-the sacraments.
