George R. Terry, “Leadership is a relationship in which one person
influences others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain
what the leader desires.”

people so that they will strive willingly toward the achievement of
group goals.”

TYPES OF LEADERS
Leadership styles are classified based on various aspects. The most
popularly known is classifying the leadership based on their style of
working:
• Authoritarian leadership: The leader dictates policies and
procedures and he does not entertain any meaningful input from
people. This kind of leader expects the group to complete the task
assigned to them. The group does not have voice on anything; the
leader has the full control and power.
• Democratic leadership: The leader encourages group participation.
Involves all members in planning and completing the task. After
discussion, meaningful ideas and suggestions from the group are
accepted.
• Laissez-faire Leadership: The term ‘laissez-faire’ comes from French
means ‘let them do. The leader trusts the employees/group and gives
full freedom. Many young people like this leadership. This kind of
leadership causes great confusion.
LEADERSHIP IN HEALTH CARE
Leadership is an essential factor in improving the quality of health care and
outcomes. Quality care in safe environment is the basic approach of any health care
facility. An effective leader:
Plans for quality care in safe environment.
Plans for the provision need based health care services.
Plans for money, material (resources including information technology) and
manpower to provide services.
• Plans for continuous ongoing evaluation to make further plans based on feedback.
LEADERSHIP APPROACH IN HEALTH CARE
SETTING
The following leadership styles are widely applied in health care setting:
Transformational leadership: This leadership style has four main
components: Intellectual stimulation, individual consideration, inspirational
motivation and idealized influence. They are clear visionaries who provide
great support and encouragement to the followers and serve as role model.
People respect them and follow their ideals.
• Collaborative leadership: In collaborative leadership, people work together
in a conducive environment toward the execution of effective practices and
processes. This leadership makes the organization agile and high performing.
• Shared leadership: Shared leadership is defined as an activity that is
shared or distributed among members of the team that will underpin this
way of working. Shared leadership influences the members to lead one
another to the achievement of group or organizational goals or both.
• Ethical leadership: People with ethical conduct and good practices
employed for leadership positions will promote appropriate, ethical
conduct in their actions and relationships in the workplace. Ethical
leaders can boost employee morale and help them feel enthusiastic
about their management and their work.
