SINGLE & MULTILAYER
FLEXIBLES
Single Layer Pouch (Flexibles)
- Made of Single Layer
- Less expensive and easier to produce
- Lack of barrier and other performance properties
Multilayer Pouch (Flexibles)
- Made up of multiple layers of different materials
- Require lamination process
- Possess barrier protection, strength, and heat resistance. In the case of a Lay’s
potato chip bag, the aluminized layer on the inside provides a barrier to light, air, and
moisture, helping to keep the chips fresh for longer.

TYPES OF PRINTING
A) Flexo Printing
• Involves the use of flexible printing plates made of rubber or photopolymer
materials.
• A combination of relief printing and rotary letterpress.
How it Works
• The rubber (or photopolymer) plates mounted onto rotating cylinders, forming a
printing plate cylinder and an impression cylinder.
• The substrate (Mainly on paper surface) is fed into the printing press, and as it
passes through the press, ink is transferred from the plate cylinder to the material.
TYPES OF PRINTING (CONT’D)
B) Gravure Printing
• A type of intaglio printing, which involves engraving an image onto a cylindrical
printing plate.
• Highly automated and efficient, allowing for large-scale production with minimal
human intervention.
How it Works
• The engraved cylinder is partially immersed in an ink fountain. The excess ink is
removed by a doctor blade, leaving only ink in the engraved areas.
• As the cylinder rotates, it contacts with the substrate (eg. PET Film/ Matt OPP Film /
Paper), transferring the ink onto it and creating a detailed and vibrant image.

RECYCLABLE
A) PE/PE OPTIONS
- Mono-material for replacement of conventional flexible packaging on putting
accessories.
B) PE/PE-EVOH
- Excellent barrier properties against moinsture, hydrocarbon (lipids), excellent usage
and replacement of conventional food packaging
- Percentage of EVOH within 3-4% of packaging are recyclable-friendly (according to
EU RecyClass)
Both material after usage can be recyclable

LACK OF EDUCATION AND AWARENESS AMONG CONSUMERS
- Confusion and misconceptions surrounding eco-friendly packaging, leading to
scepticism or resistance from consumers.
REGULATORY LANDSCAPE
- Inconsistent regulations and standards can create challenges for companies
operating in multiple markets. Clear and harmonized guidelines can facilitate the
adoption of sustainable packaging practices on a broader scale.
COST
- Sustainable packaging materials and technologies often come at a higher cost, cost
disparity can be a barrier for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs), who may have limited budgets.
SUPPLY CHAIN COMPLEXITY
- Implementing sustainable packaging often involves multiple stakeholders in the
supply chain, including raw material suppliers, packaging manufacturers, brand
owners, retailers, and consumers. Coordinating and aligning the efforts of these
diverse actors can be complex, requiring collaboration, transparency, and
commitment to sustainability goals.
INFRASTRUCTURE
- Inconsistent regulations and standards related to sustainable packaging can create
challenges for companies operating in multiple markets. Clear and harmonized
guidelines can facilitate the adoption of sustainable packaging practices on a broader
scale.
