PRACTICAL
RESEARCH 2
Prepared by: Mary Grace D. Belen
What to Expect in PR2
• Conducting actual research
• Analyzing and interpreting data
• Applying research in real-life situations
Today’s Focus
Introduction to Quantitative Research
Lesson Objectives
• Differentiate Quantitative and Qualitative Research
• Understand the importance and use of quantitative
research in real-world contexts
• Identify key characteristics of quantitative research
• Apply knowledge through activities and reflection
Warm-Up
• What do you remember about research?
• Have you heard of the terms ‘quantitative’ and
‘qualitative’?
Qualitative Research
It is a method of inquiry that explores and understands
human behavior and experiences, focusing on in-depth
understanding rather than numerical data. It uses non-
numerical data like interviews, observations, and textual
analysis to explore the "why" and "how" behind
phenomena.
Quantitative Research
It is a systematic investigation that uses numerical data and
statistical analysis to quantify variables, establish
relationships between them, and generalize findings to
wider populations. It focuses on objective measurement
and uses deductive approaches to test theories and
hypotheses.
Why is this lesson important?
Helps us make sense of numbers and patterns
Used in:
• News & politics (surveys, polls)
• Health (COVID-19 statistics, BMI)
• School (grades, pass rates)
• Business (sales reports, customer feedback)
Real-Life Examples of
Quantitative Research
• Example 1: "On average, teens spend 7
hours on screens daily.“
• Example 2: "The school pass rate
increased by 10% this year.“
• Example 3: "Restaurant A is rated 4.8
stars out of 5."
Quantitative vs.
Qualitative Research
Feature Quantitative Qualitative
Data Type Numbers Words/Descriptions
Tools Surveys, Experiments Interviews, Observations
Purpose Measure and Analyze Explore and Understand
Example 80% passed the test students felt anxious
Characteristics of
Quantitative Research
• Objective – Researcher stays neutral
• Uses Large Samples – Ensures results are
valid
• Statistical Tools – Data is analyzed using
math
• Generalized Data – Data taken from sample
can be applied to the population if sampling is
done accordingly, i.e. sufficient size and
random samples were taken
Characteristics of
Quantitative Research
• Visual Result Presentation– Data is numerical
which makes presentation through graphs charts
and tables possible and for better conveyance and
presentation.
• Faster Data Analysis– The use of statistical tools
give way for a less time-consuming data analysis.
• Replicable – Study can be repeated with similar
results
Finding Clues:
Quantitative or Qualitative?
• Measures height of 200 students
• Interviews on student motivation
Practical Application in
Daily Life
• News Headlines: “70% of voters support the new law”
• School Data: “Class A’s average is 85%”
• Health: “Steps per day tracked on a smartwatch”
Reflection &
Generalization
• What can we say about quantitative research?
• It uses measurable data
• It allows us to be objective
• It helps answer how many, how much, or how often
Is it Quantitative or
Qualitative?
• “Students’ test scores were analyzed.” – Q or QL?
• “Feelings about online learning were gathered.” – Q or QL?
• “The average age of participants was 16.4 years.” – Q or QL?
• “A researcher observed classroom behavior.” – Q or QL?
